B]WHERE CAN WE HEAR THE SLAM PRE OR THE DACS ONE...[/B]
Hi, I've seen these units in the list of gear used but I can't find files produced with them. Will it be there soon ? I'm in interest to buy one of them. Still don't know which one but TLS may contribute to enlighten me. Thanks for your helpful and instructive work. Salvator TRINITY STUDIOS Residential Recording Studios www.editions-ihs.com |

Salvator, there are SLAM! files on Sessions 3 and 4. We have the DACS here and it will be on upcoming recordings. The SLAM! has gone back to Manley.
The SLAM! is a $6000 unit with limiters and mic pres, the DACS is a $2000 stereo mic pre. Why are you comparing these two units? They're very different. Dan Richards Digital Pro Sound The Listening Sessions |

Hello,
I've heard the DI files of Slam !, but I'm especially in interest with the mic pre. (for now im not so impressed. Was waiting for a bigger shock) Soon, there will be a "pre only" version of the SLAM ! at a more affordable price range. First I need more channels of pre. Second, I need better preamp since I'm not satisfied with mines (I currently have 1272, Avalon 737, amek 9098 and, ARGHH *Tascam!*). The manley and the DACS seems to be the best around. Need to hear them though before buying. Is the next session planning for soon ? What about drums ? OH for example... quote: Wow... there are so many "best" pre-amps it's really pretty impossible to call anything "best". It's all a matter of where your tastes sit, the microphone selection and placement you do, and how the tone of the pre-amp relates to the context of the other tracks that comprise the song. On any given day, any pre-amp can indeed be the "best"... on any givn day, any pre-amp can also be the "worst". It's always a question of what you feel best supports the musical statement... no more, never less. The idea [IMNTLBFHO] is to get a good, wide range of quality tools, and apply them appropriately to the music you're presenting. As a visual artist will have a greater opportunity to paint a more detailed visual image with a wider range of colors on their palette and a selection of different brushes... as recording engineers we will be afforded a greater opportunity to capture the musical statement/performance to the best of our abilities, and translate that sound as part of a cohesive representation of the artist's intention with a greater and varied selection of tools. Yes... you should never buy anything without hearing it first... but hearing it alone gives you no point of reference. You really can't get a feel for a piece of hardware until you've used it in your environment, with the music you record, in context. Thanks for your reply.
Yes Fletcher, I know that a good choice of preamp is source depending. However, I am looking for a unit wich give me the accurate signal that comes from my mics. I don't look for a unit which will transform too much my original signal. Even if I know that sometime those coloration can fit perfectly the situation. The two preamp I mention seems to work well (and often very well) on almost everything. I've hear several pres and, so far, my favorites are Grace 101, Buzz audio, millenia tube and Neve 1081. But those are not what I'm looking for : I've done some reccord with M149 WITHOUT preamp, straight to ADC(TC6000). It was very detailed, wide and dynamic.NOTHING BORING It was a plesure to hear this way, and for the first time in my setup, I was really happy and exited with what was putting out my Dynaudios. Then I recorded the same tracks with some pres I had around. (9098, 737sp & 1272) Each time I was disapointed. The artifacts induced by the pres was always unpleasant. (less details, a sensation of ceyling, lower transient response) An UGLY sound in comparison = frustration. I use other mics (U87's, 414's) and I need a preamp to match the line level. I hope the DACS or the Manley will provide was I am waiting for. The best ........ for my need. Salvator TRINITY STUDIOS Residential Recording Studios www.editions-ihs.com |

Either of those pre's might do the trick... but so might a DW Fearn or a Martech... an Avalon 2022, a John Hardy "M-1" and a GML 8302/8304 aren't too far behind...
There are still a whole bunch of options that will give you all you describe, and then some... and those options are damn near limitless. Best of luck with your search [but I will caution you... if you search for "the best" you will only find variations of "the best"] Fletcher Mercenary Audio Or hangin' with Harvey Gerst at: PSW's "recpit" |
