Listen to a selection of mics and preamps in use on recordings and mixes done at The Lazy I by Brian McKenzie (b!).
Session 6 - The Mixes - Part 1 Tracks 1 & 2 are eclectic pop/folk. Track 3 is emo/punk Session 7 - The Mixes - Part 2 Track 4 is nu metal. Track 5 is hip hop. Track 6 is heavy-guitar rock. I listened to Baby Doll (track 7) and Butterflies (track 4) on session 7. I loved Baby Doll, I reckon you caught a great vibe doing it in such a short timeframe. How many guitars are going on there? Sounds like a few, but the different sounds really add to the overall feel. Butterflies....man it is SO GOOD to hear one of these bands not using that pingy top end overbearing bloody snare sound. I enjoyed this track as well. They seem like pretty good musicians, the vocalist sounded very even through his range. In the heavy sections I thought maybe the guitar might have been a bit loud initially but the lead break cuts through it nicely, as does the vocal. Can you tell me what guitar amps he used? Will listen to more ! thanks for posting these clips, they are great Brendan |

Hi Dan,
Great job here Listened to all the tracks. It seems that the V69 is the choice mic for most of the lead vocals. Although it seems that its a little on the dark side for the highs especially for Session 6 but it still cuts through the mix very well. Probably thats experience and skill Did you process the vocals after recording.... |

Tracks 6's vocal stood out for me too. The TLM103 was my least fave tonally. Dan, you guys have that whole 1982 sound going, IMO. Very solid state. Like Steely Dan and Clash records were the sonic models. I wanted to hear more bottom end-both bass and kick in all of the above. But, I'm a fat bass addict. The guitar intro on track 4 seemed to have some digital clicking in the background. Is it just me? I know that didn't come from the amp...nice sounding guitar, though. Those were the first impressions. I'll listen again later. Maybe throw them on a CD and put them in the car. |

Disregard my comment about the bass for now...I listened in the car-much tighter. I think it's something other than a "lack" of bass bothering me...I'll listen at home on the system I know well and let you know.
on second listen- Snare on the first track is awsome. Track 4 seemed the best overall. The rap tune sounded pretty ametuer overall, IMO, the male vocal was dull as all get out. He definately needs a more articulate mic. He's doing some fairly fancy phrasing that seemed lost in the muffle. The girl's voice sounded really processed-chorus/pitch shift maybe? Track 3 was overall my least fave sonically...stood out among the others I thought. Steely Dan might not have been the right model as the music is so different...but Fleetwood Mac and Steely Dan have always have what I would decribe as a very solid state sound. It's that late 70's/early 80's high dollar production sound. You know, when everyone stopped using that "outdated" tube gear. I put it on the same CD with Flatcat's "Hannah's Sleeping" mixes and Tao Jones' new cuts. Tao's new "Wake Up" just sounds great, IMO. So does Flat's latest Hannah mix... I'll listen again at home. hey brendan!
baby doll's got about 4 guitar tracks total(including the solo).... after geting the main guitar track live we went back and overdubed a few tracks for coloration and to fill things out a bit. the amps on butterflies were::::::::: clean::: line 6 flextone dirt:::: messa boogie mark 4 line 6 flextone line 6 pod (rectified) most of the dirt tones coming from the boogie with the line 6 stuff(used sparingly) for the top end crunch b! quote: |

That Marshall V69ME sure sounds good on the lead vocals of the first couple songs. I certainly didn't expect it to but a pleasant surprise.

I'm still on session 6 but I have some questions. I noticed on the Wicked Gift songs you used a 57 and a VLZ pre and then Drammagog. Could you not get the sound you wanted out of the kit or did you just decide to drummagog it from the beginning. This is a technique I had never considered since drummagog actually could kinda take place of a good mic and preamp as well as a well tuned drum in a nice room.
I also was curious of the use of the MP-2 on the toms. Sounds a bit overkill to me since on these 2 songs the toms don't play super important roles. I am just now getting to the point where my studio is complete enough to worry about high end pre's and I never invision using such a badass pre for toms unless they are part of the beat. I know you have an arsenal of pre's that weren't even busted out in these tracks, but maybe you could fill me in on what you look for in a tom pre, and why. The bass cab was mic'd with an AKG D112 and Shure SM57. What benifit did dual micing the cab give you? Did you DI it as well? On the Something About Vampires and Sluts I noticed KM184's were used to mic the "drum room". Was this a feed through a PA or amp? If so was it a bitch to sync it up with the DI'ed drums. What modivated this creative move? I recently asked you about the Red5 Audio RV8 and RV10 and I'm not sure if I got a reply (i'll check in a second). Sounds damn good on these bg vocals. What other mics did you try first, what did this mic add to the vocal sound that the others didn't? How does the RV8 stack up with the SP C1... how on earth do they sell this thing so cheap?!!! (Ok, maybe you don't know the answer to that one Do you have any pictures of the sessions? I'd like to know what guitar amps were used, see the location of the mics on the bass cab, the room the drums were played in, how the Audio-Technica AT4050 and Avenson STO-2 was used to mic the acoustic (this seems to be an interesting mixture as its not a stereo pair), and anything you can give us. I know you mentioned track info and pictures in another thread and it really has me more curious than ever to see the actual session pictures. You really hit us (me) with a curve with the complete arrangements! I think its a very cool idea. I just noticed your name isn't on the first 2 tracks, and Brian McKenzie produced and engineered them. Maybe you know the answers, maybe not -DUSTY (CAPLIFIED) |

The RV8 just sounded clearer and cut through the track. The 414 was a close second. The 103 was undefined for the track, and the ADK TC gave a bigger, more airy sound that didn't work as well. The RV8 has proven to be a great all around mic. The C1 is more hyped and has a sort of sheen. I like C1 on vox, some amps and some drums. have never liked the C1 on acoustic stringed instruments. The RV8 is more neutral and has proven excellent on vox, acoustic gtr, killer on amps and drum OH's. Actually, there's nothing we've tried using the RV8 that hasn't sounded really good. Your wish is my command... I see Lazy I records with SAWStudio. My question is what interface(s) did you use between the preamps and the PC? Inquiring minds want to know... Also, what's your take on SAWStudio? |

I have in the last few months taken my studio to a higher level with new preamps (Universal, Avalon and Manley), and converters (Apogee AD 16).. Now I want to start getting better compressors... I noticed that you guys used the RNC and wow it really sounds pretty good... I actually was thinking more about a 1176, LA2, or to save a little money the Summit LA20.. I am sure that the RNC is great, but is it as great as the 1176 or something in that price range??? I have been down the road of less expensive gear and have found you get what you pay for... Is that the same with the RNC???

these guys sound way more expensive than what there going for..........
save alot $$$$$$$$ grab a rnc or two.....i promise you'll find it very usefull for almost every application! get the 1176,la2 or la 20 when you got some money to spare.......christmas is coming up ya know. b! quote: |
