I'd like to hear male vocs on AT4050 through A-designs mp-1(2) to compare w/ the speck 5.0.

Also, I love the velvety sound of the speck + tranny and wonder if there is something comparable for less money? If so, could I hear that too?

Thanks, great site!

nefcat, we have male vox using a 414 through the Speck and the A Designs preamps on an upcoming Mic Pre CD. The Speck is a clean high-gain pre and the A Designs MP-1 is an all-tube pre. They sound quite different from each other.

As far as a less-expensive alternative to the Speck with a similar sound - I dunno'. While not the same, there is the M-Audio DMP3 which is a very good clean dual-channel pre for about $199. comparable for less money? - I'd say a used Speck. You can check on the Used Gear page at the Speck website. They have a MicPre 5.0 up there now. It's probably the one we used on The Listening Sessions, as we just returned it not too long ago. Call up Vince Poulos at Speck and speak with him about it. Very nice and knowledgeable guy running a great company.

If you want to find out more about the A Designs MP mic pres, call Peter Montessi - another great guy with great products.

Here's some links to my review of the A Designs MP-1 and the Speck MicPre 5.0.

The A Design's unit blows it away. The Speck is a decent value, etc, but the MP1 / MP2 is an incredibly slept on mic pre. I can' openly give them my full endorsement (yeah, I paid for my unit) as I've used it almost exclusively on my vocal chain when tracking. It is the cleanest sounding tube pre I think you'll ever hear.

Also, if you plan on doing an DI/HiZ stuff, the MP-2 is a no brainer. Awesome on clean strat guitar.

I love my A Designs MP-2, which is the two-channel version of the MP-2. The DI is first-rate as well.

I'll be getting a Speck pre and EQ in for eval soon.

Has anyone heard the A Designs side by side with the Peavey VMP-2? I'm curious if the Peavey is very inferior in comparison.

I haven't heard them side by side but I've heard them both and can tell you that the A Designs is a high fidelity type of pre where the Peavey is a color sort of pre. Some people compare the new Sebatron to the old Peavey and I'd tend to agree.
