Hi Dot, Peavey has a single channel tube mic pre (I think it's called the TMP). I've searched several forums and can find no one who has tried it. I think it has only 24 volt phantom power but it may be a good pre for miking a guitar amp with a dynamic or ribbon. It is susposed to be a real tube pre. Any chance you can have it on a listening session? Thanks, Don

Dan, how bout the Pendulum Audio Quartet?
And could you try to find an original Neve 1073 module? Maybe this way we could try to decipher differences with its 'clones' (Vintech, Brent Averill, GR, etc.) |

speed, we're contacting Pendulum Audio.
Getting a lot of 1073-type units is a tall order, but we're actually working on it. Dan Richards Digital Pro Sound The Listening Sessions |

Hey Dot - sorry to say it's taken me so long to actually take a little bit of time and start listening to the Listening Sessions. Since I'd like to consider some better mics this year, I figured it was time I started doing some research.
I'll be interested in the bass DI stuff. That Summit Audio DI and the Avalon one also look nice. Oh my God, my wife is just going to kill me. Well - I have stuff I can swap out, I guess... That's really an excellent resource. I'm curious, though, as to whether you're going to issue any report on preferences from the engineers or others that give listens to the stuff. I'd be interested to hear about conclusions you or others have reached thus far. My songs |

quote: Hey flatcat, we're not really doing a shootout here - and every piece of gear has some value. We let the products do the talking. To a large degree what I think doesn't matter because people can listen and decide for themselves. So, no we won't be postling anything "official" from the engineers on The Listening Sessions. But, of course, if you read around in some of the forums, I do make certain recommendations based on what someone is looking for. And - as far as conclusions – that's kind of tough to do right now because we're listening to so much gear and have new stuff coming in all the time. I've been using Digitech VTP1 since about 5 years. It was discontinued some times back. The thing is so called hybride design, that is valve tube pre, solid state EQ, and AD converters, with lots of inputs and outputs, including SPDIF out and an option for AES/EBU. Is anybody outthere who uses VTP1, and what's your opinion?

Hi, Estradin. I haven't tried the Digitech VTP1. I can tell you that the technology has really increased in the last couple of years, and there are now mic pres available even under $200 that are better than pres from five years ago that cost much more.
My general opinion of any budget pre that's more than 4 years old or so is that its worth upgrading - and doing so doesn't have to break the bank. On the other hand, if you're happy with the VTP1, by all means use it and possibly look at another area of your recording system where you could make an investment. Hey Estradin,
I'm gonna have to agree with Dan, the VTP-1 was a pretty good pre a few years back (And I'm sure you'll continue to find use for it) however, the advancements in mic pre design over the last few years are astronomical. For instance, I have been a diehard fan of the HHB Radius 40 for a good while and I recommended it highly. Once we started the listening sessions, and I told Dan how I couldn't wait to put the HHB up against all the other stuff we had in, it quickly became obvious that a virtual plethora of pre designers had made enormous strides since the last time I bought a new pre. I still love the HHB, don't get me wrong ... but you have got to check out some of the new toys. The pre that you'll find out there for a fraction of what we were paying 3 years ago are kickin some serious but when it comes to "bang for the buck". So keep your VTP 1 - you'll still use it, but go grab yourself up a "new hotty" and watch your monitors come to life. Hi Dot and crew. First, I want to reiterate what so many others have said by offering up a sincere Thank You for your efforts in producing the Sessions. You and the folks at Sea Note are providing a valuable service to those of us who don't have ready access to all these wonderful toys! Hat's off to y'all.
Wanted to ask you about the Studio Projects VTB-2. I see it listed as being one of the preamps used but have yet to see it show up in any of the four sessions. Is this because it hasn't been been gotten to yet, or is it not available even to you folks? I recall Alan saying something about shooting for a June time frame for release, but do you have a proto unit or something? Needless to say, I eagerly await the release of this one. Also, not sure how you folks feel about the Focusrite stuff, but recently I've been looking at the Voicemaster Pro. Any chance you might be able to test that one? Thanks again for all your efforts and reviews. |

Hi, Skeetch. Thanks for the thanks! Glad you're getting something out of this.
The products listed have been confirmed by the manufacturers, but that doesn't mean we have them all in yet. The VTB-2 is not on the market, but when it's ready it will be included on the sessions. I'm currently in contact w/ Focusrite, and will have something soon on them. Dan Richards Digital Pro Sound The Listening Sessions |
