Hello
We are setting up a recording facility for radio plays, news reports, processing podcasts etc but not music groups or actual broadcasting transmission. We know the technology to record in a music studio but can anybody give me any advice specific to this type of studio.
Thanks in advance and any input appreciated.
Matt

Hi Matt

For a radio studio, there is no need for a large booth as for a music studio, obviously.

A booth big enough for 2 people is important, the voices like to "work" off one another for a better performance. Performance is important in radio.

What is handy is to be able to split the booth & have 2 voice positions & 2 mics for a bit of separation. The agency person will inevitably say: "Can you move the second voice down by a smidgen..." Then you will hear the move on the overlap. 2 booths with a glass divider is probably approaching the ideal for a radio studio.

Learn how to work quickly, have your SFX on a disk & know your music library, all important tools for radio.

Regards
Peter

also, if you are going to be doing a lot of 2 voice stuff, Large Diaphragm Dynamics like Shure SM-7's or EV RE-20's (or the new heil stuff) will help cut down bleed because of their decreased sensitivity.

Good noise gates help as well (if you are trying to cut down on bleed).

I'm utterly baffled at the general opinion regarding smoking. I don't smoke, but it's a bar, for God's sake. That's what your supposed to expect. It's a den of iniquity where people are going to indulge in all of the minor vices and sins denied to them during their mundane workdays. You can wreck your liver, ruin your hearing, get into a fight, and pick up an STD, but somehow smoking is unacceptable? Sheesh. We've turned into a nation of entitled whiners.
