ya I tested at the output pads, and also the wires that came out from those pads and was getting 36V.

I wonder if there might be a problem with the volatage regulator. Is there a test point before and one after the regulator for the 25V supply? If so perhaps the regulators drop some voltage? The usually do. You said you had a hard time soldering the those parts, maybe they got damaged by excessive heat? Also are you sure they are oriented correctly? Mine have the clip part of the heat sink on the front side of the regulator, not on the metal, which should face the hole for the sink's solder tab.

Troubleshooting can be hard - take your time!

I'll have to check it when i get home. I went and bought a thin weller tip that fit into my radioshack iron which made cleaning up the board really easy compared to the tip i was using before. I'm at work but when i get home i'll double check again and make sure i've got it in correctly. The one heatsink tab that Jason mentioned before that was just short of the pad was actually not attached originally and after getting a decent joint I was coming up witht he 36V. It's very possible that I might have overheated some pieces due to my crappy solder tip before. Hopefully I can narrow down the potential problem and just order a few parts and see if i can't salvage this thing

Bummer, I was hoping it would be something easy like that.

Maybe you could get a technically minded friend to look at it for you. It doesn't even have to be an electronics guy but just someone who you can show the parts list, instructions, drawings, and your board and say "See anything wrong?". Just to get a fresh set of eyes looking at it.

If everything is in the right place and oriented correctly then you are looking at a component failure as ape mentioned. At that point, maybe Scott could walk you through some troubleshooting.

Keep us updated

You bring the CE, and you can use the pre Waytogo

Actually, I'm going to try and get ahold of a matched pair of mics so I can do some comparison clips between the RNP and the HJFP2. The only pair of mics I have is a pair of MC012's and I don't think those are matched well enough to do a meaningful test.

But the offer stands Dusty, drop me an email and come on over.

I'm 400 miles from KC. I'd love to hear it in person. Is there another preamp that uses a similar design? JFETS?

I'm sure you'll get it figured out and it will end up being something stupid. That seems to be the way it works for me most of the time. It's probably just one component sitting there laughing at you and once you find it and fix it then it's on to better tracking. Waytogo

In the meantime, turn your head and don't look.

Sorry Stub, had to do it.

Yes, but you have to remove the like 30 screws that hold the top on. Not hard, just time consuming. Or you could just not put it on to begin with Smile

Aproximate dimensions on the mic pre card? Are there provisions made for just powering it off of a wall wart, or would I have to set up my own little board to regulate it? And while I know the input iron is the same size as a Jensen and probably others, how about the output iron?

Ther output is pretty big - check out Hamptone.com for pictures. The card is pretty big, 4" by 5" or so.

I forgot to tighten down my handle so I will probably be taking the cover off to tighten it up. I will do some measuring before I put it back on if you want.

I figured I'd bug the general populous a couple more times before contacting Scott again...

Scott put this revision up on the site recently:

==================
2/5/04: The instructions for assembling the psu tell you to install B30, test the 25.5vdc supply, then install B30, and test the +48vdc supply. The second B30 should be B50. The idea is you test one circuit, make sure its ok, then test the second. I explain it verbally so I think most people were able to work around it. If you have two meters, you can install both bridge rectifiers (B30 and B50) and bring the two supplies up at once.
==================

The instructions mention installing the B30 to test the 25.5VDC, then later he says to install the B30 and to test the +48VDC. Jason, according to how you did it earlier in the thread, didn't you install the B50 then test the 25.5VDC and it worked out? Would you say that his site update has the correction backwards or should I really install the B30 first?
