Alright, so Im totally new at this, so keep that in mind lol. I want to build a lil vocal booth inside the room i use to record.
I was reading through a couple pages on this site and found all the info on mineral wool. My question was that if i made a frame and lined it with the mineral wool and covered it with some heavy fabric, would i still need to buy some acoustic panels? or would the insulation with the covering by itself be enough? i hope i worded that all right... lol thanks! |

I've yet to put any of this knowledge into practice (it's so much easier to talk about it then buy more gear), but here's what I've gleaned so far.
The framed and covered mineral wool is exactly what you're paying for when you buy acoustic panels. It's just so much cheaper to do it yourself. Also, apparently the fabric used to cover the panels should be very breathable, that way the soundwaves have an easy time being absorbed. I've heard it recommended that you try breathing through it, and if you can do so easily, you're good to go. Any corrections or additions are greatly appreciated. ------------------------------ http://www.walkergibson.com |

That is correct, although the DIY isn't necessarily *exactly* what you'd pay for with a quality product.
Depth of material, how it's lined, etc, all has a bearing on the total effectiveness. But anyway, as a DIYer myself, I've been quite satisfied with my homemade stuff. Aric Keith www.junglenoisestudio.com/samples.html |

Now by vocal booth are you looking for isolation so you can track vocals at the same time as the drums and Marshal half stack? Or, are you just looking to creat a space acousticly suited for voacls? Lance |

the second option. i will only be doing vocals in there and wont have any intruments playing at the same time

In that case you might just make some 2'x4'(or 6') panels on stands. Then you can move them as you need them. (fashion a little booth for vocals then move them to the early reflection points for mixing.) |

yes I would do the same. Actually if the room is treated properly you don't have to have anything on stands.
What is the total size of the room and how is it set up? Any pictures you can post? Glenn |

I know I'm about 6 months late....
I have had luck with Burlap on the outside. That is the most "breathable" I could think of...one thing to check is the fire rating on it. |

So what did you end up with treatment wise?

I just did a vocal booth in my studio that was 6 x 7 with a jacked up ceiling. (angles and such) that has turned out pretty good actually. The back corners have "super chunks" Take a piece of 2' x 4' x 4" mineral wool. Cut it in half, then cut those two halves (2' x 2') into a X. That gives you 4 squares per 2' x 2'. Then stack that up in the corners from floor to ceiling. I put a 1" x 1" strip up the from the floor to the ceiling to act as a internal frame. Staple any breathable fabric you like (ya just gotta be able to pass breath thru it) and then frame it with nice wood and stain it. Do that, or paint it, your choice. I then put a nice solid, thick glass slider to the next room in. The walls also have 3 panels up that I had left over from Ready Acoustics. (www.readyacoustics.com)
That is what I did and it turned out great and looks great. Best, Doc MONUMENT SOUND ON MYSPACE - ADD IT! CHRIS ANDREWS - MUSIC JOBS |
