Well, first of all, you say you're doing room within a room. Are you framing all the rooms out with 2x4's or 2x6's? Why are you suspending the ceiling from the above ceiling? Why not put in beams to support the ceiling, isolating it completely from the existing structure, and allowing you to insulate it and run ducting and all the rest of it. Plus, you'd get storage space between the 8ft. ceiling and the existing structure. Have you taken A/C and/or heat into consideration? Are you floating the floors? More info would be useful.

As for your question, continuing up past the 8ft. ceiling is pointless, if the 8ft. ceiling is soundproof. If it's not, you'd have to soundproof the existing ceiling/walls completely if you want a soundproof environment. Which would make putting in the 8ft. ceiling pretty pointless.

Thanks Contrast
The rooms are being framed with 2*6 putting in beams to support the ceiling is a better idea. The space is a basement with concrete floor would i need to float the floors.

It's really about how soundproof you want it. I'm about a week away from finishing up my space, a converted warehouse with concrete floors. I didn't float the floors because I decided it would have been too much trouble for what I was looking for. I don't need complete isolation, I just need to knock the edge off of the noise. As it stands now, the weakest link for me is by far the doors. I'm using external solid core doors, sealed with a gasket and threshold, and, while a lot better than internal doors, they're still not that quiet.

So basically, it depends how far you want to go. If the rest of your soundproofing's not that crazy, floating the floors isn't going to help much.

I think i will just cover concrete floor with quiet floor mat then thick carpet in all rooms. What about hitting your doors with soundproofing mat and cutting it large so it covers a bit of the doorframe when closed.

Hey Contrast. here's a place that may be of some help with your doors if you don't already know about this place! They seem to have some serious gasket/seals etc.! I'm going to be ordering some soon myself!....

Snatchman-

Nice site, I hadn't seen it before. I already installed some gaskets/thresholds from Home Depot, and they definitely helped. I don't think I'll be redoing anything anytime soon though, I can live with a bit of sound transmission.

Byskye-

You might want to reconsider the carpet. It will kill highs and some high mids and not much else, leaving you with a dead room with loads of low end problems. For some great info on acoustics, I suggest you read all of this and also check out shortyprs' soundproofing thread here.

Hope that helped you out a bit, I was directed to Ethan's site by shorty and it helped me out immensely.
