I have one room that is soley used for tracking vocals and accoustic guitars. I am having some troubles in that room with accoustics lately. I had move some things around and now I get some standing waves around 750hz, and the room sounds somewhat boxy. One thing I do have in the room is a guitar rack that holds 7 guitars. I have all sorts of accoustics, resonators and other guitars in that rack. Can having accoustic instruments in the room cause some strange resonents?
Also for a room that has no monitors, what is the best way to get a frequency responce of that room? I am sure there is some freeware room analyzing software on the net, but I assume you have to use white/pink noise as the generator. So that would mean I would need to move my monitors into the both? The room is 7x10 aproximately, and has a 7.5 foot ceiling. On one long wall it has a 6 pannel hollow door and a 30"x36" window looking into the control room. Short wall 1 has (3) 2x4 2" foam pannels. Short wall two has a velvet drape floor to ceiling on a curtain rod (so I can open or close it) and it has a single 2x4 foam pannel. Long wall one has the door and window. Long wall two has (4) 2x2 square panels with 2" foam hanging in a diamond pattern. I have several corner bass traps in each corner about 2 foot tall. |

Jack - I guess you would have to bring your monitors into the room if you want to do some analyzes. You could download all necessary files in wav format from the internet. But I don't think this will be necessary.
I have instruments in my room too & I have never noticed any problems with that, but theoretically it's possible. On the other hand instruments act as good diffusers. My recording room is a little bigger than yours. Dims: 13’x11’x7’4” Here is the plan: Here is what I ended up doing: Basically almost the same as the plan was. In the last picture you can see the absorber 2nd from the right. Dims: 6'x2'x4", made of mineral wool. I have 6 of them in the room & they are all movable. Basically almost all of my panels are movable, even corner traps(you can see in the picture). That way I can move them to wherever & even remove them from the room if I want to. I keep a few 2'x4' plywood boards around too, helps to add some liveness & woodiness in the room, works especially well for tracking acoustic guitars. Hope this helps. |

Adding a poly on the opposite side of the window could be nice too, although it's difficult to say how well it would work for that distance.

Where did you get the mineral wool? I looked at a few places this weekend and could not find any.

I've got it here:
Roselle Building Materials 303 W. Irving Park Rd Roselle, il 60172 630-894-5200 The product is Thermofiber SAFB. I like it a lot cause it has 4pcf density, which absorbs more low end. I guess it could be too far for you. Check this link out, I believe you can find identical product nearer: http://www.bobgolds.com/InsulationContractors.htm These guys shouldn't be too far from you too, but a little expensive: http://www.atsacoustics.com/item--SAFB-Mineral-Wool-2-i...Case-of-6--1006.html |

You can call Roselle Building Materials & tell them to deliver. It's only around 40 miles. I guess it will cost you around 100$ for delivery. Bats are 30$ for 4 2'x4'x4". Will be hard to beat that price.
