Hi all. I'm thinking of attempting to make some Bass Traps with the OC. Have anyone used burlap, ( is it ok) to wrap the 703/705 with? I think I remember going into a high- end playback store ( $150.000.00 plus stereo systems.. :eeks) and they had panels on the walls cover with burlap over some form of accoustic material!( it actually sounded good in the room come to think of it!) Also, the 703 with the foil backing,is it okay to use and which side faces the wall? Thanks!..... Cool

Hey man, I'm 90% done making various traps for my rooms. All of them are covered with burlap, so I hope to hell that it works Slap . FWIW, Rag Shop has it for $3/yd, in natural, cream, and black. There're also some stores that sell it online in all different colors. I say go for it. One word of warning though, it's a very loose weave, which is good for acoustics, bad for holding fibers in. If you are susceptible to respiratory irritation, you might want to wrap the fiberglass in polyester first. I think Shortyprs did that, you might want to search for his glorious studio construction thread. I just used the burlap, and so far I feel fine.

As for the FRK backing, it depends what you're going for. It changes the absorption characteristics of the fiberglass, reducing the high end absorption and increasing the low end performance. If you're mounting it straight to the wall(no air gap) and want to take advantage of the foil, mount it foil side to the room. Otherwise, turn it around so the foil's against the wall (the foil's not going to affect the sound more than the wall is). If you have an air gap, could go either way, just depends what you're looking for. Again, check out Shorty's thread, I found it very informative. Good luck, hope that helped some.

Hey, thanks alot Contrast. That helped plenty!I'm basically be using this in a "drum/multi-purpose" room. Thinking of just hanging it off the walls "clothe-line" style, about 1-2" off the walls around the room! Think this will work? Stringing a wire around all 4 walls and just hang the 703/705 wrapped panels along the walls as needed!.. Help! The room is 11'6"(D) x 16'(W) x 9'6" (H)...Thanks!.... Smile

Well, if you're recording drums, I'd suggest putting at least a few panels on the ceiling above the drum set. Same goes for recording standing vocalists. The 9.5" height should help out a bit, but you'll probably still get some iffy reflections off it into the overheads. If you have carpet, go sparingly on the ceiling, and consider using the 703 FRK side out so you don't kill all the high end. Next, I'd say cover as many corners as possible. That goes for wall-wall and wall-ceiling corners alike. Then, when that's all sorted out, play around with placement on the walls to break up standing waves. How many of these are you planing to build? You could always build gobos so you can change your room around as necessary. As for mounting, I don't see why that wouldn't work; 703's not all that heavy. If you want more info I can post a bit more in depth about making frames for the fiberglass/burlap, mounting in the corners, ceiling ideas, etc. Have you considered a slat resonator or 2, or is that going too far Eeks ?

Here's a shot of my tracking area, just for some visual ideas.
Bass trap in corner is 5" of 703

Other absorbers are 2" 703

Here's a closer shot of gobos.
The copper pipe has wooden dowel inside and can be raised to a higher position, also.

Hey dudge, I like the look of those gobos, though I'm not sure I would've gone with such a big base. Would they fall if you used a mic stand base or something? Just curious.

Thats a good idea dudge. I've thought of something similar with my panels using a mic clip for a pencil condesor and a wooden dowl like that. I wouldn't leave the foil on honestly. You'll absorb more sabins if you take it off. Be sure to space it from the wall a bit too. Burlap is the best acoustical fabric, its just that it doesn't look so hot.

Well, I agree on the natural shades, but black looks fantastic.

Yeah the base is plenty big. I'm sure a mic stand would work great. Anything really, that you can hang it from with velcro cable wraps.

Yeah Snatch, you can get it in black. I don't know if you have a Rag Shop anywhere near you, but they carry natural, darker natural, and black burlap for $3/yd. If they don't have it in stock, they will order it. Otherwise, there's black burlap here, but it looks like they make you buy 25yds of it. They have other colors (red, blue, green, etc.) for $4 a yd. If you're doing a lot, the bulk thing might not be so bad, it's only $2.40/yd. I used more than 25 yds. in my three rooms, FWIW. It's also nice that it's only 36" wide. The Rag Shop burlap's 48", too narrow to do two, but far too wide for one-lots of waste. But, I don't know what the quality of it is, or how tight the weave is. It looks ok, but it's possible it's tighter, no idea what 10 ounce grade corresponds to.

Interesting. I checked out the link – there's one of these JoAnn fabric stores here in Prescott, AZ (a fairly small town) that just expanded into a "SuperStore" and is having a grand opening next week. The place is bigger than a K-Mart! Think I'll check it out.
