My space is a bit weird, it's a finished attic, with arched cielings with about a 4 ft flat point at 8 ft in the center. the control room also has a 'nook' which is a bit harder to explain, the opening is only about 3-4 ft high, and the top part of it follows the art of the cieling. I will try to post photos. what i need to know is where to start with treating this room. i would like to make some corner bass traps. but don't really know how to place them with the pitched sides of the room. please take a look at the photo and give me any advice you may have. thanks

Hey spandexstallion,
you really need to give some more information, like what are outside walls made of, what is the wall separating 2 rooms made of, some pics will be good too. I'm thinking that the room below is CR, right? Don't want to be the guy with bad news, but you probably will need a lot of treatment on your ceiling & I'd suggest to build something the same form of the door square you have on the left side & put it on the right corner to make it proportional, otherwise you will have funny stereo imaging. Other than that all the same applies: corners from floor to ceiling or as high as you can get in your case(you'll probably need 2 peaces for your corners: one for the lower 4 ft part & another hanging from the ceiling the same way), then early reflection spots, next the back wall as much as you can & above head position. |

well. . .the walls inside the studio are all drywall/ insulation, as well as the seperating wall. although that wall has a window of double paned glass. the angled walls are drywall/insulation, then the roof. the bottom room is actually about 1/3 deeper than the drawing, and i have been using it as the live room. I'm not really too worried about sound getting out/in as it hasn't been a major problem as of yet (there are at least 3 house/studios on my block so neighbors don't mind) and my windows to the outside are all double paned. I'll take some pictures tonight and post.

If it's drywall/insulation you most likely won't have to much low freq problems. I'm not sure that using a room with so many unparalleled angles for control room is a good idea, you've got to have some messed up stereofield. Have you tried mixing in that room yet? How does your panning translate to other systems?
Here is a good read for you to know how to build absorbers & to understand the basics of treatment http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html#diffusers%20and%20absorbers Some test tones if you don't have a software to generate them http://www.ihearyou.com/testtones/ Sweep tones are very good, they will tell you a lot about stereo imaging too, if you have some serious abnormalities you'll notice the sound bouncing from one side to another & things like that. |

by adding a sloped reflective/absorptive cloud/false ceiling over the mix desk position and perhaps adding some slat resonators on the sides - you can create a reflection free zone. on the back corners put in "superchunk" style bass trapping. same in the live room.

thanks gullfo. I've actually for the time being put some sheet rock over that opening, and put corner bass traps (2ft x 4ft, by 4inch 703) on the corners, and hung some more panels above the mix position. it was just a bit easier, and I've had decent results. I think i will apply that angled approach to mounting my absorption panels overhead. thanks so much! the illustration is rather comprehensive. many thanks

I also have an area rug on the floor. should I remove that in the control room, or do you think it doesn't really matter, as i'm trying to remove as many reflections as possible?
