So my new U87 is here...

Big Laugh

I've sold some cabinets, mics, other little stuff to buy an 87 & suddenly after doing my taxes I discovered for the first time not only I didn't owe money, but I even had a little return. Got a killer deal on a brand new XTC, how could I pass on that?! I couldn't care less about 87 right now Big Grin

What can I say, if Bogner decided to retire after making this I couldn't blame him, I don't even know which channel I like better. I've ruined my whole day today playing this thing for 7 hours. It was not easy to choose between XTC & VH4, but I think XTC fills a huge hole I had in my amp department, plus it can do anything, really ... anything!

PROBABLY my most favorite amp of all.

way too much power for my meager recording means, tho the discovery of the weber mass lite, has made my boogie very happy to run wide open!!

even late at night...

drool factor = 10 of 10.

Well .. I have no doubt that my favorite amp is Herbert, it flored me the first time I heard it, not even to mention when I played it.

I don't want to get this amp bug inside of you too, man, but have you ever played an XTC? You will need to get much louder with your boogie for a good tone. I don't know what your situation is & how loud you can really get, but if you can bite it financially you should really try one. XTC has a half power switch, which takes 2 power tubes out of the current so that cuts the power in half. Also there is an old & new style switch which is another 50% reduction. I didn't get the A/AB option, but that could give you another 50%. All together it's like 15W amp. Of course it sounds much better with settings on full & loud, but stick a ribbon in front of it & you won't even feel much difference recorded.

Only if you can afford to buy one I recommend you to check 3 amps:
Bogner XTC - the best bang for the buck amp IMO, seems like expensive, but for what you get it's cheaper than boogies. This was the first head I had to sit down & learn what's what, I should read the manual first, but I'm an idiot Smile
Diezel Einstein - sounds great even in your bedroom
Elmwood Modena M60 - supposedly the best at low volumes, but I don't really dig Elmwood tone

Just got this bad boy back with 490/498 pulled out of an older Gibson. It's a killer now! Sounds freakin' incredible!
The tech was veeeery impressed with the quality of Edwards' craftsmanship, he even agreed that it's built better than most of Gibsons he played.

FANTASTIC! Love those heads... I want one for the studio as well, hell, I want one for me.

This is my GO to "fun guy" 85 JCM 800 50 watt and the BOG.... Love that cab. Got the cab for $500.00 pretty much NEW from a friend. It was never played out and man I can only imagine what it would do with the XTC head attached to it.

SWEET MAN!

Doc

Thanks Smile & don't underestimate your JCM800. One of the best heads out there IMO.

Bogner cabs are different & woody. I've tried Bogners, Diezels, Mesas, Oranges, VHTs, 1x12s, 2x12s, 4x12s and Bogners by far have superior balance & smooth top end right in front of the speaker, excellent for recording! That said I found something very special in Bogner OS 2x12 that can not be had in 1x12 or 4x12, they just have some unique character. I'm currently selling all my other cabs & looking for a second OS 2x12 to load it with EVM12Ls & that will be it for me I think. Diezel has just started shipping his new cabs made in Germany, which are told to be very good, but I highly doubt it is going to be better than Bogners, but I will give it a shot once they get to the US.

Dude! JCM800 is what I grew up with. Definition of ROCK in my book. Every HIT record on my gen had one. I have a 2x12 Boogie cab too. That thindg is killer. The Fender Prosonic I have is sweet too.

The Diezel's I am NOT a fan of though. Lots of $$$ for one. Raher have a XTC.

Sweet man.

Yep. The greatest records out there have been cut with JCM800s & modded Marshalls. I don't get the whole Mesa Boogie madness, JCM800 blows them away IMO & usually can be had for less money. The only Mesa worth looking at in my book is M-IV.

I had a boogie 2x12 I sold right after I got the Bogner. I liked it better than 4x12 actually, but the top was pretty harsh on all Mesa cabs.

The Diezel's are not for everybody, they sound nothing like classic guitar sound; that's why I adore them.

XTC, the darkest amp I've ever heard, is the best thing that can happen to a studio owner; amazing versatility, if there is something one is not able to get out of it, he should blame himself. But BEWARE!!, these amps are overly sensitive to what you plug in them. I plug the Schecter in & .... BIG BIG disappointment. I just have a couple of tunes to track with 7 stringer & the Schecter will be up for sale right after.

Dude...why unload a perfectly good guitar when you can jam some killer pickups into it?

I have a C7 that I've had for years...finally got sick of the Duncan Designed pickups and swapped them out with some Bare Knuckles Nailbombs...and now I'm pretty sure I have the craziest sounding 7 string in Minneapolis...they're not too expensive...and it's like having the punch of EMG's, but without that sterile thing that EMG's do.

I'm utterly baffled at the general opinion regarding smoking. I don't smoke, but it's a bar, for God's sake. That's what your supposed to expect. It's a den of iniquity where people are going to indulge in all of the minor vices and sins denied to them during their mundane workdays. You can wreck your liver, ruin your hearing, get into a fight, and pick up an STD, but somehow smoking is unacceptable? Sheesh. We've turned into a nation of entitled whiners.

Duncans are not bad pickups, 59/JB in LP sounds fantastic with XTC by the way. PUs can be changed, but that's not what's bothering me. First the tone is so cheap compared to LP tone & second - electronics in this thing suck. I'd have to change the electronics & pickups too probably and I'm not quiet sure it's worth it. I'm telling you play the C7 & then unplug it & run an LP with the same set of PUs, if you don't feel like throwing away your Schecter then ........ throw away your amp. Big Grin

Got a set of 57s installed in this thing finally. Very vintage sound. I'm sold on Gibson pickups; Modern Classics, Burstbuckers, 57s - all of them sound great.

Stick a fork in me!

I keep getting these amazing deals I can't resist. I just hope I'll be able to hold on to these amps.

I've been dreaming to have my hands on a VH4 for years, but I kept buying other amps.

I've been asked many times to compare this amp to that amp, this channel to that channel, so I just wrote a review/comparison of all 4
