One of the best & relatively inexpensive purchases I've ever made. MXR M108 has become an important link between my guitars & amps, you can make even inexpensive tube amps sound pretty killer with this thing.
Highly recommended!

I've heard (and this is only what I've heard) that a lot of tweakhead metal kids like to use stuff like that to pull some bottom out (like...100-250) and push some mids (anywhere from 5 to 1.5k) before the amp to keep things tight, and then push the bass on the amp a little more to keep the heft factor up.
Seriously, bud...I've been rolling TONS of gear lately (by my standards, anyways...inside of this year I've bought 2 bass amps, a Marshall, and 4 basses)...but DAMN has your gear pile been stacking up...you considering going into the backline rental biz? :-P Ian Combs Producer/Engineer/Monkeyboy Lightspeed Group, Inc. ----------------------------------- I'm utterly baffled at the general opinion regarding smoking. Thanks for saying that, I wish I had someone like you by my side. I agree, I've gone over the line crazy. I'm actually thinking of selling my QTC40s, it really hurts, but I'd rather keep my amps. In all honesty I can do just fine having one Herbert, but different amps inspire me to write different music. On the other hand it's been like 2 months I haven't been buying gear & instead I end up spending whole a lot of money in bars, clubs, casinos & shit, I can imagine if I didn't have this huge pile of loan on my neck I'd be throwing money down the drain.
In either case it's officially over. If I can find a good bass guitar I'll sell my current 2 basses for it, I just HATE my current bass sound. If I could find the drummer I want I'd sell the most of my recording equipment & go to some studio to record my stuff, I'd be actually happy to do that, I really don't feel like recording or mixing. I wrote near 50 songs within the last year & a half, it's a shame to say how many of them I recorded. |

That is the struggle with the whole engineer/musician thing...how much of each are you?
To be honest...I try like hell to think like a 4-tracker when I'm writing...I try to not care and use the simplest tools available to me so I can get the ideas down and work on the song and the arrangement...then when it comes time to actually put it down to put it out...I put the engineer cap on and try like hell to make it sound like something. Seriously, though...it makes me think about something I read...an interview with Ross Garfield from Drum Doctors in LA...check them out...they are the DRUM GENIUSES behind so many albums you know by heart that it's silly...someone pulled him aside and said "you're really good with this whole drum thing...you could kill yourself trying to make it as player...but as an insanely skilled drum tech you could have a career..." Look them up and you'll see what I mean...there is demand for some of that sort of specialization...guitars and amps and that whole thing can be so touchy because so many guys think that "their sound" comes from their gear, when in reality 90% of it is the way they play...and when you start working with the set that understands this...they understand that there's a set of tweakers out there that know how to push the gear around in such a way that they make it sound great...if you can learn how to do that...you've got a starting point for yourself as an engineer...plus, like I said..you've got most of a backline already taken care of! Unfortunately, that doesn't do tons for you as a musician...and that's one of those things that you have to figure out how to separate, and then commit to...it's tough...believe me, I'm well aware of how tough that is...but...when you figure out how to make it work...it can be really awesome to be able to see it through by yourself and be happy with it at the end. Never thought of myself as a SE, but was always kind of forced to do it.
Very true, but there is a little trick here, you need a lot of experience with a lot of different amps to be able to pull it off. The more amps I play the more I'm able to get out of my other amps, you kind of need to learn what sound comes out of doing what, I'm sure you know what I mean. BTW that's one of the reasons I like the little MXR EQs so much, if you know what you are doing you can get one amp sound like 100 amps. For me the worst part is mixing, it's boring for me in the first place & then by the time you get there you kind of don't wanna look at thing one more time. I have a lot of stuff waiting to be mixed, can't make myself open that project again. I'm NOT a guitar player, bass player, drummer, keys or whatever, but I have to do all those things & then SE |

Sold my Naylor SC38 & QTC40s as my cc bills were starting to get out of reach. Besides since I've started double amping I've discovered that 2 Bogners & 2 Diezels are already more than I can handle. On the "bright" side I bought a Burny Les Paul from 80s for a veeeery good price. I initially bought it with intention to sell it for profit, but after I did a little setup & stringed it with a set of 11s I'm thinking what else I could sell now, because I'm definitely not letting it go. This LP plays too good to be true, it doesn't have the mean sound of Edwards LPs though, but then no other guitar I played has that. Very nice instrument!
