Nice tune, Rick.

The mix isn't bad at all, but it does sound pretty heavy handed in the low mids to me. Because of this, I don't think you're getting the separation from the instrumentation you could be. Also, I think it's hurting the tone of the vocalist. You have a lot buildup in freqs from about that 200 to 500Hz range to me. Plus, there's not much in the mid/high mid range.

To start with, I'd see about cutting some low mids out of both the gtr and vocal and adding in a little in the mids to high mids to see where that took you.

Also, something about the snare that doesn't seem quite right. I'm not sure. It's like it's not real focused. Like I'm hearing the snare from OH mics that aren't centered on the snare. Maybe that's the room or an effect you choose. Doesn't seem as bad when it's just the brushes.

Just my thoughts. I think a few minor tweaks here and there would really improve the overall mix.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for taking the time to comment...good stuff, I really appreciate it.

I'll try working the EQ as you suggest to see if the low end cleans up a bit. Interesting comment on the mid/high range as well, I'll try that too.

Regarding the snare, does it sound blurred to you? There are some grace notes that I might not have coming through the mix and are only adding to the lack of focus.

I'll certainly try out your suggestions and repost...thank you!

You're welcome, Rick. I hope my comments are a little helpful.

How about describing how you recorded the drum kit. Are you using more snare from the OH's than a direct mic?

Good comments, of course. I think when I record my own stuff (my wife and I actually) I tend to get to wrapped up in the details and need the fresh perspective, so the comments are very helpful.

The drums. The drums are midi triggered drum samples I put together using EZ-drummer. The interesting thing regarding your comments is I mucked with the overheads a bit with the product and applied some compression after the fact. So my guess is what you are mentioning has to do with me not leaving well enough alone. In my next pass I'll try backing off some of the changes I made. The product allows you to adjust the different mics etc and I am sure I probably messed it up hoping to sculpt the sound a little.

Next pass will hopefully address the stuff you mentioned.

The vocalist has a great soothing voice! Nice melodies too. As far as the mix goes, I think it's pretty nice overall, but I'd pick a different snare and kick sample. Real nice job.

Rick,

FWIW, I think this mix is a big improvement over the first one. Good work!
