So hi everyone, Thanks for inviting me. This looks like a great forum and I already recognize a lot of friends here.
I am posting Large Marge's song ONE NIGHT STAND.mp3 [I am not in the band... but, I am the band's best and #1 supporter]. Many of you have already given me great feedback on other forums. But the more feedback we get, the better. Thanks, and I look forward to your comments. BTW, you can get to the Large Marge website at www.largemarge.com [This message was edited by Dot on 10-04-03 at 04:17 AM.] |

Hey Sue!
Everybody, she's a long-time online buddy of mine from the VS Planet and the ultimate band mom! So be nice and make her feel welcome here. Her son Danny has a great band called Large Marge who's been tearing up the clubs in LA. Dan Richards Digital Pro Sound The Listening Sessions |

Well, first of all, Sue, before I get much into the actual music; As someone who's heard Large Marge songs since the first humble VS880 recordings, I can tell you that the investment in newer and higher-end equipment is really paying off! The improvement in what the band is getting now sonically is considerable. Of course, their engineering and production chops have improved as well.
I'll listen some more and pop back in here later with some comments. Dan Richards Digital Pro Sound The Listening Sessions |

The recording sounds great Sue. Not my personal listening taste. I like everything tone wise except the toms in the very last drum roll (I think they need some "body"). Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your comments, Musical5. I should have warned everyone that LARGE MARGE is a PUNK rock band. I know that PUNK rock is not everyone's first choice genre!

Gentlemen, welcome to my underground lair. Yondan |
Wow, Large Marge...this is some cool stuff! Thanks for posting...and welcome to SF. Your son's band is pretty rockin', did they record this themselves or in an LA studio?

This song definetly sounds good. The drums sound killer! The extreme panning of this song sounds good, kind of gives it that "Dookie" sound. The bass is punchy and pretty consistant. And the writing is good. The vocals and backup vocals sound great as well.

Sounds great! I like the drum sound a lot, particularly the snare. I'm not the world's biggest punk fan but I like this mp3 a lot. Great sound, solid writing. Thanks for sharing it.

After listening to One Night Stand it's apparent that Large Marge is ready for prime time. Great musicianship. They're kind of riding the Sum 41 bandwagon a little too much for my taste, because that puts them a year or two behind the curve already. I'd like to hear a little something from this band that doesn't sound as "safe" and calculated.
Part of that could also be the particular PODish guitar sounds [ or over-use of SM57's ] and the way the song was mixed. If I ever had Large Marge in the studio I probably wouldn't use any 57's on anything. Use a lot of tube mics instead on the amps, and lots of FET large condensers on the drums. A band is only as good as the drummer, IMO. Never mind the songs, vocals and all that, if you don't have a great drummer to help serve it up, everything falls flat. The fact that the band has a great drummer goes miles in my book. Overall, though, they seem like perfect raw material for a good A&R guy and a good producer to work with. But looking for "the song" that would get the band signed - "One Night Stand" isn't it, IMO. "Absent Minded Lives" is closer, but on a business level still wouldn't get me to put up the mega scratch to launch a band like this. Problem: I can't remember either of those two songs in my head after just listening to them. Large Marge is ready to go - now they need come up with some real bonafide hook-laden TOP-40 PLAY IT ON MTV HIT SONGS!! hey sue, large marge have the punk/pop thing pretty much nailed. i'm not sure how old they are but that one night stand song is great. however, as a note i did kind of lose interest in it after the guitar solo. i think the song needs something to pull the trigger at that point. the vocal harmonies are very nice and the playng, songwriting and recording are all strong as well.
i agree with dot in that a band like this could be an a&r guys wet dream. keep it up large marge. |

no problem sue.
i remember reading a post awhile back and you were trying to get butch vig to produce the band. has the band thought about asking Fat Mike from NOFX to work with them? that would seem like the most obvious person who has made a name for himself to ask. other than that i know that stephen egerton and bill stevenson from the descendents/all have a recording studio in colorado called the blasting room and i'm pretty sure some of the ataris records were recorded with them. after hearing the type of music they do i would be inclined to go in this direction. hope this helps, i'll shut up now. best of luck to the band. |

Funny, you should raise the subject of NOFX.. our favorite punk band. We leaned that NOFX uses Ryan Greene and Motor Studios in San Francisco to produce their albums. Soooo, I sent in a demo and put a call in to him.... and he called me back today!!!!!!
He said, Motor Studios charges $650/day, that it generally takes 15 days to record 10 songs (if the band is kinda ready with their music), that he heard the LARGE MARGE demo and is willing to work with them...and that when he is in LA later this week, we can talk further about "the project". |
