Hi Folks,
I'm trying to salvage some old recordings. Alas, the masters are in ADAT format, and I have no access to ADAT machines (and therefore the master tapes). It is likely to be this way for some time.

The only mixes I have floating around are pulled from old cassettes.

That said, as I learn my new DM5s I wonder if you folks can give me some general comments/suggestions on tone-shaping/mastering based on your monitoring environments?

General stuff, like "bottom is too wooly", "could use more/less top-end detail" etc. would bge a great help!

The first track is "The Gods Hit the Bricks"

Thanks!

For being remastered off of a cassette copy, I think that's pretty great! I wouldn't change anything other than the tape hiss (if possible), but not if it's at the expense of 'the sound'. Are you doing the 'cassette remastering' on a computer, and if so have you tried any of the Sound Soap / Waves X-Noise / Cedar type plugins on the cassette hiss?

Hi chrisrnps,
Thanks for listening, and for the kind words!

It was tracked back in the day when I still had a studio full of API, Summit, Focusrite, Neve, Neumann, etc (had to sell when my then girlfriend got cancer). Studio is vastly more modest now.

Yep - I'm trying to clean them up in Cubase SX. I could try some noise reduction demos and see what the trade-off is.

If its not a huge inconvenience, could you let me know what tone shaping you think I might need to do with this one?

"Face On the Floor"

Thanks!

Needs noise reduction. Mix sounds real nice. No issues that I can hear, not on my HR824's anyway

Nice job on the recovery.
