it's short and sweet, at 2:20 minutes.

this is a first pass mix and master, i could use some 'other ears' on it.
mine are fried.
thanks.

I don't really dig the bass sound & your kick a snare don't have enough balls to give some energy to the track. Other than that sounds good.

So you like EZ Drummer , ha?

Cool tune Gonzo!

Likes: phrasing, melodies, groove! Overall, the makings of a badass track! I don't think the bass track is too bad ...I might simply add a little more top end for some clarity.

Could use improvement: I understand most instrumental music nowadays uses the room-sound type kits with hardly any punch. This way the drums stay out of the way of the consistent, dead center guitar. I'd like to see this trend change as the lack of punch does kill the oomph of the track. So the short answer is fatten up the drums and use wider pans.

The whole mix is a little cloudy right now. L&R rhythm tracks are masked. POD?

Try a get a bit more creative with panning your instruments ....the layered guitars are right in the middle(or close) the whole time. You could open the mix up quite a bit by doing something with those.

Nice work!

E.

Yeah, I agree with BR. A little crowded up the center and in the low to low-mids. I like it, though. A few minor tweaks here and there should make a big difference.

thanks to all that listened....

i just uploaded a brand new mix (sunday afternoon @ 4pm mst), with less room mic on the kit, more snare, a new bass track, a cleaner submix....
see if this one's better....

nbarts-
well, i recorded a new bass track because of you.
LOL
i like it better.....
new drum mix entirely. the ezdrummer is cool for me....

blueroom-
thanks man, lots of good suggestions there, i took them to heart, and re-worked the drum tracks all over.

since this is my first blush with the software, instead of outputting to seperate tracks for each piece of the kit, i output to a single stereo file...
so, it'd be easy for me to learn.
the internal mixer on ezdrummer, lets me change all of the kit, level and pan wise....
next time tho, i'm gonna try the individual outputs, so i can effect them and eq them all seperately.
i do not own a pod.
all mesa amp, tho i did mix them with the intent of allowing a smoother sound.
this new mix, is a bit more aggressive.

i did wider pans, much less room mic, and re-eq'd the kick and snare for more pop, added some compression as well.

tbrugh-
thanks for listening...
see if the new version sounds a bit better....

Cool! Now I what I'd want there would be a 2buss comp on your drums. Something like 2:1 ratio with threshold/attack/release set right so you can have some of the room & cybmals come a little forward & snare to have some snap.

nbarts-
i think maybe i'll try something like that on the next project, where i'll output every piece, instead of just stereo two track.

TAX DAY SPECIAL!!!

-- brand new mix, with hotter drums, more dialed in.

(same link as before)
or

quick mix change synopsis:
hotter snare, both upper and lower heads. applied multiband compressor to entire kit. brought overhead mics in from extreme far left and right to closer to 90 degrees from center (3:00 and 9:00). brought kick down a tad.

dialed back lead guitar volumes, pumped up the rhythms slightly.

added high end at 2.2khz to solo guitar. added 200 hz on solo guitar.

dip at 215hz on bass guitar. rolloff at 40 hz.

i'm happiest with this mix so far...

I haven't heard your new mix yet, because I don't have anything to hear it on right now, but you don't really have to have your drums separate to try that trick. You can just throw a compressor on your stereo track & maybe back down your cymbals from ezdrummer later if necessary.

YEP!
that's exactly what i did, only i used a multiband compressor, so i could really dial in specific frequencies and ranges to suit just the snare and kick...
that, and tweaks on the internal mixer of the ezdrummer, helped me dial it right in.

Some little changes can be made to improve the mix including playing with attack release times on your drum compressor, but overall I think you've got it. I'd get rid of the multiband & use a 2buss.
Do you have your delays as inserts? If so I'd EQ them some to open some space.

Great sounds!!! I am in awe of the tone you get out of your Mark IIB. Sounds more like a C model.

Great arrangement, keeps the song interesting.

The EZ Drummer would fool most.

Mix sounds great, Waytogo Waytogo

dutchman!
thanks for listening..

yeah, the old markIIb, it's got it's own thing going on for sure...

main reason i've held onto it thru the years.

tho, i'd love to add a couple of modern things to the mix (cornford carrera for example)

the ezdrummer, i'm still experimenting with (of course)

i'm trying to determine which pieces (snare types, drum types, beater types, etc) i like the most, and which ones sound the way i want...
so the next tune should be a little more complicated mix wise, as i figure out how to output individual tracks for everything, and then start really tweaking and dialing it in...

glad you liked it!

new mix!

thanks to another forum member-
now i know how to redirect midi outputs to new tracks, AFTER the fact!
LOL

i had wanted to seperate the snare out from the kit, and didn't know how to do it..

but i only took out the snare top and bottom tracks, left the rest of the kit on the track 1 stereo output....
and tweaked the automation on the mix.
i added a seperate sonitus reverb to the snare top only, and played around with it til i got what i wanted....
re-eq'd the snare tracks....
got more POP out of them.
put a multiband on the overall kit tracks, and getting the snare out of there, really let me dial the kick and overheads in a lot better.

see if this mix sounds any more dialed in!
