('i' before 'e', except after 'c') Wink

this one is inspired by a situation in my life that just happened.... still happening.....

my lady went back east to deal with elderly abuse and identity fraud on her father.......

download "Thief"

here's the lyric:

"thief"

ok-
you're just a thief
got no respect
a single minded thought inside your tiny little brain
a stain
on society
do you think i give a flyin...
fortune has it that you will pay....

you will pay

you will pay

you will pay

(dirty lowlife)
(disgusting thief)

you will pay.
you will pay.

This is, in part, a bigger experiment for me, to learn how to use the new POD XT.

all the guitars and bass were done with this unit, direct.

i've used nothing but tube amps for 25 years, so i'm real curious about trying to find cool and different tones with this machine.

Ah, the resident guitar wizard...

gonz, it's a very cool song and I like the middle section. The tones on the guitar aren't as energetic or ballsy as other tracks I've heard from you.

You've got a good voice for a song like that.

yeah, i went for a more saturated tone on this one, just cuz i could!
actually, the big experiment with the pod, is leading to running the thing into my mesa boogie as the power amp, and i think that's going to thicken and liven things up a bit....

i've got a fairly live room, with wood floors and flat smooth walls and ceilings, and it's going to be tricky micing the cab......

but i'll be posting those tunes soon.

Nice guitar work! I agree, though-I have a Flextone & the direct out is always weak compared to the miked amp.

Good job. Should this remind me of Suicidal Tendencies? Gonzo-x can really play the guitar. I like the panning and the saturation a lot. The singing is great as well. Keep it up Gonzo-x.

Dude...rockin'! I'd love to lay down some drums to stuff like this...find a drummer and get off the drum machine man! Drums are maybe panned a little hard.

Good shit...keep rockin'...awesome vocals and guitars...

i dig that flextone... if i was gigging, that'd be my first choice....
and your right about the beefier tone with the mic.... but having the choice is nice too!

Suicidal tendencies, eh? i'm not really sure what they sound like... now you've got my curiosity up! i'll have to check it out.....
thanks for listening.....

warhead
your moniker reminds me of that extreme tune "warheads"...... LOL
hey, if you're saying you wanna create a stereo pair, already-eq'd-and-mastered-like-you-like-em "warhead drumtracks".......Wink

then by all means!

i'd love to lay down fresh tracks (pardon me, a skiing term) on top of new live drum tracks. just play along with the original file, mix it down, and have your people call my people.
hehehehe

those drums come from a zoom 123.
they are out of the box panned.... it's just a stereo out, and you get what you get.... very basic

thanks for listening.

The songs sounds very good. The guitar playing is excellent. I agree with losing the drum machine ASAP(although you do program very well).

Speaking from the "I use synth/electronic drums too" camp, I agree with the comments above. I'm retradcking live drums on a bunch of stuff as we speak, based on the comments from this board.

Cool song. Great guitar work, and the vcals seem to fit the music type well.

Nice job.

The tones are killer on this song. Reminds me of early Tool shit. I kinda like the programmed drums. I'd like to hear the same track with real drums too, just to see how much can be gained or retracted from the song. I think the programmed drums give it a Nine Inch Nails vibe. I really like the production on the lead. It doesn't sound like one, but still shows off your ability. It doesn't just jump in and say "now we will have a guitar lead for 16 bars" like a lot of rock does. Whats the vocal chain? Sounds good!

Sounds great, man. Nice guitar work. Cool tone, I've been thinking about getting a Line 6 to supplement my Mesa. The Mesa's tone is great, but for me at least, it's a one-trick pony. I haven't had much success getting the kind of rock rhythm or lead tones I want out of it. But for wall of gain I love it lol.

Anyway, nice work. Good music.

MUSICAL5-
thanks for checking the song out.... and the comp on the playing..
the drums, well, they fulfill their duty, in the context of "sketching" out the main idea.....

h2oskiphil-
yeah, going to live drums (assuming you have access to a drummer than can do what's been programmed, and then improve upon that...) is always the preference....

i gigged for years, and played with the most excellent puerto rican drummer, who was well versed in everything from salsa rhythms to punk sensibilities, so i was really spoiled! thanks again for listening, and good luck with your retracking....

Large Marge-
thanks sue... glad you listened. it's tough being a one man band, and knowing what needs to be improved.... and only being able to point in the mirror!
LOL

Dusty-
early tool, eh?
i've listened to them as far back as aenima...i've always dug their heaviness, and ability to play outside of the box.
you did pick up on the idea of the lead, trying to be more integral to the story behind the lyric... sort of like i'm just bitching about the situation in the form of the lead... it's really suppose to be like mock dialog....
the vocal chain..... AT4033, into a ART DPS, with a dbx compressor in the loop, set fairly strong, digital into the recorder. a little post eq and some time effect real light.......

rewt_
thanks for listening. the mesa i've got, is an old Mark2b head, 60 watts, it's real low gain compared to the new stuff.. but the power amp section is what i really like it for.... i know what you mean about it being a one trick pony, but it does the one trick better than anything else....
the thing to do is try the line 6 stuff, and see if there's any vibe to it for you.....
goodluck.

i'll get to download everyone elses stuff this monday and tuesday, and try to return the favors......

gonzo-x,

Gotta love it, great track with pleanty of emotion!

I use the electronic/programmed drums also, we're the only ones that know the difference...I've had drummer's misread mine for acoustics, and their not that great to begin with.

Typically good stuff, Gonz.
Where is the angst? Where is the indignation?
(only kidding).
Real drums!!!!!!!!! Let Warren take a crack at it!
Your guitar work is very inspiring.

Stixxs-
"only ones that know the difference..." ha!
everybody torques me over the drum machine thing........ everybody!
oh well........
LOL
well, i don't mind, because i know all you guys that even bother to download and listen, are really into it, and others might think it's geeky, to talk about frequencies, and arpeggios, and trembelos........ (sorry strongbad) but I'm into it..... and appreciate all the good ears.
I'd love nothing more, than to just sit back and play.... and f*ck all this engineering crap....
i'm just trying to learn how to be a good engineer, cuz nobody else will come and do it for me!
waahhhh!
Wink

Jon-
my vocals, well, i'm still figuring it out.....
certain things just seem to fall into place, and other things are a real stretch... not just pitch wise, but feel-wise........
the guitar stuff is fairly easy, i don't even think about that..... but the vocals, i have to work out....

the truth about this particular vocal.....

i wrote it on the spot. the first actual lead vocal take was writing and figuring out the melody. the 2nd take was figuring out the timing and the lyric.
the 3rd take was learning the lyric and melody together, and the 4th take was the keeper.

took about an hour to do the whole vocal/ with doubling the lead vocal, and doing the harmonies.
moral of story.... don't think about it too much.
LOL

KenMeister-
i've got no angst.......i've got a 401-k.
LOL
yeah, one of the easiest vocal/lyric combos i've ever done......
it just came out.
for real.
of course, this thing is really short, there's not much brain power evidenced here!
HA
yeah, i'd be happy to let warren take a crack at it.
glad you liked the wanking.

thanks to all for listening.......
