*HAVE ALSO POSTED THIS ON HR & GS.

Anyone seen the latest SOS? It features a review of a new product from new British company Safe Sound Audio. The P1 received high praise and from reading the white paper on their website, I believe it is well worth checking out and could be a real gem?

Check out the white paper and specs etc.

The max input level of 11dBu (mic and instrument) may be of concern to some, but I still think the designers deserve a pat on the back for their clever and thoughtful design. It sounds like they have really attempted to create something new and iron out some of the flaws of other designs. They admirably admit that their efforts have not resulted in perfection, but that they have gone a long way to eliminate those undesirable effects of other designs.

For £270, I think this has to be worth checking out. I have emailed they to find out if a 2-channel version is on the cards and will let you lot know if and when I receive a reply.

Kane,
I noticed on the back panel that the power requirements were 230 VAC. Do they make a U.S. version (120 VAC)?

I am looking for a dual mic pre and was thinking about getting a 'B Stock' Buzz Audio SSA1.1, but this still comes to about £700 with VAT, import duty and shipping etc.

I am now considering getting two Safe Sound P1's, as this gives more features that I think would actually be of benefit (I'm not a feature junky) and would cost only £540.

Can you convince me that the SSA1.1 would still be far superior (pre) to the P1?

I'm hoping DOT will be reviewing the P1 soon?

We're talking with them right now. Don't look for anything in the near future. Currently they do not have 110 units for the US but they're considering it. The man responsible for these units is a former Neve employee, and worked for Calrec as well. Should prove interesting!

***Update: Robert Campbell is shipping the unit for review.***

I got to give them an "A" for originality. Warren, I'm glad you jumped on this when you were searching around.

Kane, would you be interested in reviewing one for Digital Pro Sound if I could line it up?

Hi Dan

The thing is, I am simply a bedroom 'producer' and I'm not sure how valued my comments would be to many of the people out there who rely on reviews to point them towards a good bit of kit.

People want talented and experienced guys reviewing gear, who know what to listen for and have enough experience to make informed comparisons with other units. My experience of equipment is very limited and I only tend to record my vocals, bongos and kalimba and I don't think this is much of a test?

On the upside, I am the sort of person the P1 is aimed at, with a PC based system and a noisy room!

I would much rather someone like yourself or Warren at MojoPie review the unit, as I believe it to be of more value to Safe Sound and to your readers. However, if you feel a smaller review, to accompany a larger more in-depth and expert review would be of benefit, I would definitely be willing to test it to the extent of my ability and write up my humble opinions?

Cheers

Kane

If Kane is not willing, I would gladly review it for you. I have done a fair amount of gear testing for a local shop to give them thoughts on the gear that they didn't have time to evaluate.

Anyway, not here to beg. Just offer my services if needed.

Thanks

Jason A.

It's not that I am not willing Jason, it's just I want people to be able to read reviews of this thing written by well respected engineers, as I think this is fairer to Safe Sound Audio. They need proper publicity, as I feel this is a worth while product and company.

I would still relish the opportunity to test the P1, as I am seriously considering buying one (or two)!

I could also take it to a professional post-production house I used to work at and have them test it for ADR use? This along with my home vocal and percussion recordings may be enough for a review?

Hi Kane,

I cannot really comment on the mic pre in the P1 as I have not heard it either, but it would appear to me that they have concentrated the bulk of the design effort on the compressor section.

All I can say is the SSA has been designed to bring the benefits of our unique Class A low level amplifier technology within the reach of the budget user.

I do not think you would disappointed with the SSA as far as a accurate mic pre goes, but you do have your own agenda and priorities to consider.

Good luck
Tim.
