SENNHEISER MICROPHONES DOMINATE MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS

NEW YORK, NEW YORK: At twenty years old the MTV Video Music Awards are
getting a little long in the tooth, but Madonna found a way to shake things
up this year, planting open-mouthed kisses on co-performers Britney Spears
and Christina Aguilera during the show's opening number. The threesome got
together for a rendition of Madonna's "Like a Virgin" during which they also
demonstrated a novel hands-free method for carrying a Sennheiser wireless
microphone while wearing a bustier.

Madonna performed the song at the very first VMAs 19 years ago, reviving it
this year for a new generation in a medley that also included "Hollywood"
from her latest album, and a rap by Missy Elliott. All four performers used
Sennheiser SKM 3072 handheld microphones with super-cardioid condenser
capsules and Evolution 300 Series in-ear systems.

Kevin Sanford of Wireless First reports that the Sennheiser gear in the show
opener was all Madonna's own. "She used her own stuff and came in
self-contained, because they had been rehearsing off-site, so they didn't
want to have equipment changes. Her engineer came in with a touring rig,
basically, including a monitor board. I just had to coordinate it with my
equipment."

Sanford and his Wireless First RF specialists have been supplying wireless
microphones, and in-ear systems and production intercom equipment to major
television and live performance events on the East Coast and across the
country since 1996. As with previous years, Wireless First supplied dozens
of channels of Sennheiser wireless systems for the event, including the
pre-show, post-show and awards ceremony, providing 20 channels each of
Sennheisers SKM 5000 RF microphones, with 3032-U dual true diversity
receivers, and Evolution 300 Series in-ear systems.

"Anybody that was a host was on Sennheiser," comments Sanford. He explains
his choice of equipment, "because we really needed that 50mW of transmission
power - every last bit of juice we could get was critical to the
performance."

The unequalled power and reliability of Sennheiser's RF systems were pivotal
because, while the VMAs were once again held at Radio City Music Hall, in a
change from previous years the red arrivals carpet was rerouted to the
opposite end of the block. That meant that the carpet extended nearly 350
feet. "It started on Fifth Avenue, came through Rockefeller Center, around
the rink, then went down 50th Street and into the building," reports
Sanford.

For her outdoor performance at the rink, Mary J. Blige used a Sennheiser SKM
5000 with a Neumann KK 105-S capsule. Her guest, 50 Cent, brought his own
microphones, four custom chrome-plated Sennheiser SKM 5000 handhelds, which
were also used by members of his G-Unit posse and Snoop Dogg during 50
Cent's own showcase inside Radio City during the VMAs. "I had working
microphones in my frequency scheme, so he brought me his handheld mics and I
took the guts out and put mine in them," Sanford reveals.

Inside Radio City, in addition to the Sennheiser handhelds of the MTV
presenters and host Chris Rock, Sanford additionally supplied the podium
mics. "One of the podiums was RF, so they could move it around. It had
Sennheiser SK 250 transmitters in the base, so it could go anywhere on the
stage and it was always solid. I used the 250s because with their 250mW of
transmission power, they have enough strength to get to my receivers."

This being live television, Rock and a number of performers wore backup
Sennheiser lavaliers and bodypacks. "Chris Rock had a handheld and a backup
lav, an MKE Platinum. There were five segments where we had two SK 50
bodypacks with the new MKE Platinum on Rock for some of the hands-free
'bits."

Distance was not the only factor that led Sanford to choose Sennheiser's
power. "There was very, very heavy RF this year. The show needed a lot of
coverage and a lot of antenna splitting, and antenna systems hanging out in
all different directions, to make sure there was coverage. The location is a
particular challenge, particularly for the pre-show segments, he notes, due
to the proximity of NBC's broadcast headquarters and the nearby CNN studios.
"There were in excess of 200 frequencies in use on the show this year,
between microphones, intercom and in-ears," he observes. "And I'm in Rock
Center, right in the middle of NBC. I had a nine-page list from NBC of what
frequencies I couldn't use and I had to program around them. It was a
mutha!"

As ever, location recording specialists Effanel Music were also in
attendance to provide music mixing services for MTV's broadcast. Veteran
broadcast and recording mixers John Harris and Jay Vicari operated out of
Effanel's L7 and OSR remote vehicles.

Established in 1945 in Wedemark, Germany, Sennheiser is the acknowledged
world leader in microphone technology, RF-wireless and infrared sound
transmission, headphone transducer technology, and most recently, in the
development of active noise-cancellation. Sennheiser Electronic Corporation
is the U.S. wholly-owned subsidiary, with headquarters in Old Lyme,
Connecticut.

Shawn Sullivan’s World Class Audio Studio in Anaheim, California selected
ATC SCM20 Pro self-powered monitors for the Chris Pelonis-designed control
room.

WORLD CLASS AUDIO/WORLD CLASS ATC LOUDSPEAKERS

ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA: World Class Audio, Inc. is a recording facility that
lives up to its name. Owner and engineer Shawn Sullivan has every right to
boast, having outfitted the studio with some of the highest quality analog
and digital recording and mixing equipment, including a pair of ATC SCM20
Pro self-powered, portable reference monitor speakers.

Sullivan observes that the difference between the ATC speakers and his
previous monitor system was immediately noticeable. "I pulled them out of
the box and basically started working on them 12 hours a day. My mixes were
instantly better. I've been using them every single day," he declares.

ATC has over 20 years experience in loudspeaker manufacture and by utilizing
the latest in materials technology in the SCM20 Pro has produced a reference
monitor that sports a radical die-cast aluminum speaker cabinet design and
is capable of high volume with unerring accuracy. Housing a 150mm mid/bass
drive unit that employs similar technology to ATC's highly revered soft-dome
mid-range loudspeaker, plus a 25mm tweeter, the SCM20 offers a true
reference performance normally found only in larger three-way systems.

"They're extremely revealing monitors," reports Sullivan. "I don't have to
second-guess anything. Everything is dead-on." That accuracy has allowed
Sullivan to improve his game. "They have stepped up what I do. I don't have
to hype the mix - it's reality. So far everything has been absolutely
spot-on."

The accuracy of the ATC speakers has also meant that Sullivan can complete
better mixes in less time than previously, allowing him to restructure his
rate card accordingly. "The ATCs have literally made mixes at least an hour
to two hours faster than before, and the mixes are better. I'm charging by
the mix on a lot of stuff, and now I can mix into a price point that was
lower than what I could do before, so I can get more work. So I'm doing it
in less time and making as much if not more money. Better mixes in less time
- that's what I'm all about!"

The accuracy and revealing nature of the SCM20s means that his mixes are
also right the first time, Sullivan reports, which means no recalls or
further passes at the mix. Offering an example, he says, "I just finished a
mixing project for the head of A&R for BMG's Latin Division for an artist
named Zayra. I did a one-pass vocal ride with the A&R guy sitting behind me.
I handed the disc to him and he said, 'That's it? Aren't you going to listen
to it on anything else?' I said I don't need to. He went home and listened
to it on six different systems and could not find one fault with it."

He continues, "My second major project after that was a band named Greenwich
Meantime. I did three songs with them, handed the mixes to them, and they
said, 'Sounds awesome, thanks.' No recalls, nothing. They were done."

According to Sullivan, the ATC monitors don't just live at the studio but
travel everywhere with him. "I got these for my personal reference speakers
that I carry between the studio and different facilities. I also have a
place at home, too, so they're used all over the place."

World Class Audio is located not far from Disneyland in Anaheim and features
a Chris Pelonis-designed control room. "It's one of the top studios in
Orange County," says Sullivan. "Everything we do is straight into Pro Tools.
We've got an expanded ProControl and quite a bit of outboard gear, with a
nice-sized tracking room and ISO booth. I'm all about analog outboard gear.
I got tired of blowing money on plug-ins, so I have all class A,
top-of-the-line, killer outboard gear."

STONES LISTEN TO THEMSELVES ON ATCs

NEW YORK, NEW YORK: ABKCO is releasing six new remixes of the classic
Rolling Stones track "Sympathy For The Devil" on a multi-layer hybrid Super
Audio CD maxi-single on September 16th. The remix project was conceived by
the Rolling Stones in consultation with ABKCO's senior vice-president, Jody
Klein, and involved The Neptunes, Fat Boy Slim, and Dean Gillard and Matt
Ward. When it came time to approve the remixes, Klein arranged for a
playback system that included Acoustic Transducer Company (ATC) loudspeakers
to be assembled at a convenient stop on the band's worldwide "Licks" tour.

"We caught up with the Stones in Stockholm to present them with the playback
of the seven-track 'Sympathy For The Devil' maxi-single in 5.1 surround
sound," recalled Klein. "The system was culled from London, Amsterdam, and
Stockholm. It included ATC reference monitors - three ATC SCM100s and two
ATC SCM50s - so that the Stones could hear the remixes with all of the sonic
color that they were originally recorded with, as well as give us the
ability to 'rock out' when needed."

Klein continued, "Everyone was pleased with the results and the sound
quality. We found that listening to these mixes on the ATC system is the
best reference we've come across, so until further notice, ATC is going to
be the benchmark for our work."

ABKCO already utilizes ATC SCM50ASL Pro active three-way reference speakers
in its pre-production listening environment in New York City. The monitors
are primarily used for such critical tasks as archive research, track
sequencing, and quality control of digitally re-mastered material. In a
landmark project, ABKCO, which offers an ever-growing catalog of
painstakingly re-mastered British and American classics from the Fifties,
Sixties, and beyond, reissued 22 early Rolling Stones albums on hybrid SACD
in late 2002.

The "Sympathy For The Devil Remix" project features full length and radio
remixes by The Neptunes and Fat Boy Slim, which have already aired, plus a
previously unheard mix by Gillard and Ward under the name "The Full Phatt
Remix." The disc, which can be played as a standard stereo CD as well as a
stereo and 5.1 surround Super Audio CD, also includes the original "Sympathy
For The Devil" from the 1968 "Beggars Banquet" album, heard for the first
time in 5.1 on the new disc.

ATC's drivers are manufactured in-house to exacting tolerances and are
legendary for their many design innovations, such as the company's renowned
Soft Dome mid-range driver, which achieves exceptionally broad and even
dispersion to produce a flat response anywhere in the room. Situated in
Aston Down in rural Gloucestershire, England, ATC was established in London
in 1974 by acoustics engineer and musician Bill Woodman.

PENDULUM DEBUTS QUARTET II MERCENARY EDITION AT AES

GILLETTE, NEW JERSEY: Pendulum Audio, well-known for its line of class A,
high voltage vacuum tube products, is introducing the Quartet II Mercenary
Edition Tube Recording Channel at AES in New York.

"The Quartet II is not an update or replacement of our very popular Quartet,
but a complement to it," say Greg Gualtieri, Pendulum's president and
product designer. "It's a much different combination of elements, and was
designed with the input of Fletcher at Mercenary Audio to have many options
for getting unique character and tone."

Designed as an all-purpose recording tool, the Quartet combines four
elements - Dual transformer Mic/DI preamp, ∆µ (delta-mu) compressor,
Passive/Aggressive Inductor EQ and two mode JFET/MOSFET Peak Limiter - into
a fully integrated package that makes it easy to process any source.

"Lately I have been trying to minimize the quantity of hardware I bring to
sessions. In talking with Greg we started to explore methods with which I
could achieve the results I desired while minimizing the quantity of
hardware required. The Quartet II has wonderful flexibility which affords me
the opportunity to really tailor the texture of the audio to my perception
of the musical statement," said Mercenary Audio's Fletcher.

The tube Mic/DI preamp has the unique option of being able to switch between
two markedly different sounding input transformers and loading options. The
DI can handle pickups, keyboards, or line-level signals. The mic preamp also
features phantom power, input pad, phase reversal, and a switchable lo-cut
filter. Independent gain and output controls permit overdrive of the tube
stage to vary the harmonic content of the preamp.

The ∆µ (delta-mu) compressor, derived from the popular ES-8, has the classic
compression profile of the Fairchild 660 and 670 limiters. It can be used in
one of five modes: Fast, Faster, Vintage (with program-dependent response),
Average (rms responding), or full manual operation. It also features a
switchable sidechain high pass filter to decrease the sensitivity of the
compressor to low frequency content.

The new three-band tube Passive/Aggressive Equalizer is a modern take on the
classic inductor-based passive EQ. It features simultaneous Lo Shelf boost
and cut, Mid Dip and Hi Peak bands. The Aggressive mode increases the
saturation of the EQ network to add harmonic content. In addition, the EQ
can be placed before or after the compressor with the flip of a switch.

The new JFET/MOSFET Peak Limiter uses a novel approach to brickwall analog
limiting, with JFET and MOSFET modes for two different characters of peak
limiting, and accurate led metering in 1dB increments. Unlike other designs,
the peak limiter adds no appreciable distortion below threshold.

ATC (ACOUSTIC TRANSDUCER COMPANY)
INTRODUCES PASSIVE MONITORS AT AES 2003 NYC

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA: At the 115th AES Convention, ATC (Acoustic Transducer
Company) located in the UK, is introducing the SCM12 Pro, a new
high-performance, passive, two-way system capable of monitoring outstanding
levels of music and soundtrack reproduction at the lowest price point ever
for ATC quality. Suitable for amplifiers of 100 to 300 watts per channel
output, the SCM12 is designed for nearfield applications and may
alternatively be shelf- or stand-mounted.

Bass and mid-range frequencies are accurately reproduced by a hand-built
driver that comprises a 75mm (three inch) mid-range soft dome mechanically
coupled onto a 150mm (six inch) bass cone. An 'over-size' 177mm (seven inch)
very high flux, super-linear magnet achieves excellent linearity and low
distortion while offering exceptional power handling and dynamic range. The
bass cone is treated with a specially formulated damping material that
ensures exceptionally low levels of coloration. A 25mm (one inch) soft-domed
tweeter with Neodymium magnet provides a smooth and detailed high-frequency
response.

Exceptional imaging over a wide listening area is made possible by an
80-degree coherent flat response horizontal dispersion. The compact SCM12,
measuring 15.3(H) x 8.6(W) x 10(D) inches, features a sensitivity of 85dB
(1W @ 1M) with a maximum continuous SPL of 108dB (@ 1M) across a frequency
range of 62 Hz to 20 kHz. Standard finishes include real cherry wood veneer
or professional black. Other finishes are available to special order.

Noted Brad Lunde, president of Transamerica Audio Group, ATC's US
Distributor, "The SCM12 Pros puts ATC famed quality firmly in the monetary
grasp of engineers at small or large recording facilities and everything in
between. Once you listen to ATCs, nothing else even comes close- and at
this price they're quite affordable."

Transamerica Audio Group, founded by industry veteran Brad Lunde, has
quickly become the premier U.S. importer/distributor for high-end audio.
Success hinges on Transamerica providing users with technical expertise
extending far beyond the norm. Transamerica AG's product lines include AEA

Zimbelman, director of sales, ATI finalizing plans for the first API Vision
Surround Mixing Console installation at Galaxy Studios.

FIRST API VISION SURROUND MIXING CONSOLE TO GALAXY STUDIOS, BELGIUM

MOL, BELGIUM: In 1991 brothers Wilfried and Guy Van Baelen began planning
the perfect studio. Studio owners since 1980, when they built their first
facility while still in their teens, in 1992 assembled a team of studio
designers, acousticians and acoustic researchers and began a construction
project that would see phase one of Galaxy Studios completed three years
later.

Outfitted with cutting edge technology from the very start, Galaxy has
constantly upgraded to maintain the brothers' dream of the perfect facility.
The Van Baelens have been enthusiastic supporters of the DSD format, with
nearly every room equipped for multi-channel surround, and to that end have
now announced the installation of the world's first API Vision, an
all-discrete analog surround production console designed by Paul Wolff, in
Studio One.

The creative dialogue on the new console design actually began with Galaxy's
resident/engineer producer, Ronald Prent's original request for a
custom-built six-channel version of API's revered two-channel 2500 mastering
compressor. Prent, the Dutch producer, recording and mastering engineer, who
has worked with Elton John, David Bowie, The Police, Rammstein, Def Leppard
and Iron Maiden, has had a longtime preference for API EQs and dynamics
processing. He also has previously collaborated with API on a custom
six-channel 2500 compressor for surround work. Those factors, in combination
with the recommendation of API consoles for DSD production by Paul Reynolds
at Philips, co-developer of the DSD format, all led to the decision to
purchase the world's first API Vision for Galaxy Studios.

With 80 inputs, 80 API 225L compressors, 80 API 235L gates, plus 56 API
550Ls and 32 API 560Ls equalizers, Galaxy's API Vision Surround console is
the largest console ever produced by API. The center section of the Galaxy
console easily accommodates 32 API 212L mic preamps, 16 API 215L sweepable
filters and four API 205L direct instrument inputs. Galaxy has further
expanded its Vision console's input capability to a total of 208 with the
addition of 24 stereo effects return modules each with surround output
routing. What makes the Vision truly extraordinary is its two
fully-automated 100mm full-throw moving faders on each channel that can
easily be linked for stereo operation.

The Galaxy Studios complex incorporates three control rooms, six recording
environments, a pre-production room, an edit room and a mastering suite.
Guest accommodations for twelve, entertainment facilities and a gourmet
kitchen are also to be found at the studio which also features a heliport,
putting it just an hour from Paris, Amsterdam or Brussels.

The ATI Group is the parent company of Audio Toys Incorporated, API Audio,
Uptown Automation and the newly formed ATI Group Distribution Division,
which now distributes the full line of Audient products including the newly
introduced Aztec console. Audio Toys manufactures the industry leading
Paragon II monitor console, the Paragon II production console and associated
rack mount gear. Uptown Automation manufactures and installs moving fader
and mute automation for analog mixing consoles. API remains the leader in
analog recording gear, such as the famed Legacy console, the TEC
award-winning 7600 channel strip, and the acclaimed 2500 stereo bus
compressor.

SENNHEISER & ATC STAR IN ROMEO & JULIET

CLEVELAND, OHIO: Michael Bishop, a Grammy-winning staff engineer at Telarc,
is all for computer technology. One of his most recent projects, Prokofiev's
"Romeo & Juliet Suites," with noted conductor, Paavo Jarvi and the
Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra was recorded, mixed and mastered in full
surround sound using a Sonoma digital audio workstation and a matched set of
ATC SCM-150 monitors. Nonetheless, Bishop wonders if we've lost something
along the way.

"These days, concert halls are built using the most accurate measuring
devices available," says Bishop. "And there are certainly benefits to the
end sound when you use a modern HVAC system that keeps the humidity of a
hall at a constant level, for example. The old concert facilities that I
love so much - Boston Symphony Hall, Mechanics Hall in Wooster, and the
Cincinnati Music Hall where we recorded the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under
the direction of Erich Kunzel - sound so much better to my ears, though, and
they were all built by designers who were going on instinct! To be fair, I
think that the materials that were available a century ago were, on the
whole, better than what we have today. The old growth forests in particular
have been depleted to a large extent, and the woods used in modern halls
don't have the same sound."

Bishop's attention to detail has helped establish him as one of the premiere
orchestral recording engineers in the industry. Recording Prokofiev's "Romeo
and Juliet Suites" for surround was a great experience. "We really had fun
on this one. The surround aspect helps convey the lushness of Prokofiev's
orchestration and the dynamics of the orchestra's wonderful performance of
the "Suites." It was great to know that we could capture a very wide
soundfield, and also that this image would be played back by listeners as we
heard it."

Bishop relied heavily on the Sennheiser MKH 800 microphones during the
"Romeo and Juliet" sessions. "I spread four MKH 800s across the front of the
orchestra, and folded in a Neumann KU 100, which was placed in the middle of
the soundfield, directly over the conductor. The sound of the binaural head
on the KU 100 is gorgeous. Combining this output with the MKH 800s - one
pair used to create the left and right components of the stereo mix, and
another to help create the left front and right front aspect of the surround
mix - was extremely effective. It's very important to use a family of
microphones that yields a uniform sound, and that's why we rely so heavily
on Sennheiser for these kinds of projects.

"In fact, we also incorporated a double set of MKH 30 and MKH 50 mics in a
double mid-side setup into this recording. I find that blending in the
output of these microphones helps me manipulate the imaging, front-to-back,
with greater control over detail when it comes time to mix. I assign these
mics to left front, left surround, and right front, right surround. During
set up I play around with the positioning of the mid MKH 50s, aiming them to
give me the mid-field sound I want. These microphones are very important,
because it helps me connect the soundfield from the stage to the house. It
also gives the impression of the height of the hall. Does this all sound
complicated? Come to our next session and it will all make sense!"

To round out his soundfield Bishop places a pair of Sennheiser MKH 20
microphones in midway back in the hall. "The 20s complete the front-to-back
image. As I said, you want the whole surround image to work cohesively, and
that's only going to happen if you use a family of microphones. I need a
complete sonic signature from front-to-back, and for me that means u
