(PHOTO CREDIT: WireImage) MARIAH FLIES WITH SENNHEISER HS 1 HEADSET LAS VEGAS, NEVADA: Mariah Carey is currently wowing audiences across the U.S. with her Charmbracelet tour, a Vegas-style musical variety showcase of the best of the Long Island native's nine albums, many of which contributed to making her the world's biggest selling female artist of the 90s. Carey's audio crew chose Sennheiser RF microphone equipment to help bring the diva's famous five-octave voice to adoring fans with absolute clarity, which included a new Sennheiser Evolution 500 Series handheld mic and the Sennheiser HS 1 headset with ME 105 capsule. Monitor engineer for the "Charmbracelet" tour is Glen Colett, who started in the business as FOH engineer for Waylon Jennings in 1976 and spent 16 years mixing monitors for Bryan Adams. Explaining the need for the headset, he says, "Mariah does a 'fly gag' where she's placed up in a hoist. She comes down from the ceiling in this little basket and descends on top of the piano. She sings during the whole sequence." The Sennheiser headset provides Carey with total freedom of movement thanks to the HS 1's lightweight brass tube construction that maintains accurate positioning while keeping her hands free during the ride. The sonically superior ME 105 cardioid capsule sits atop the headset and maintains exceptional directivity, isolating Mariah's silky vocals from the other high volume stage instruments. Collett recalls that he knew the headset combination was clearly a winner as soon as he heard it. "It came in, we tried it, and both the front-of-house engineer, Trip Khalaf, and I said, 'Wow, that sounds really nice!'" With Carey wearing a barely there white mini-dress for the descent on a white fabric swing, the choice of bodypack transmitter was also crucial. "We're using the tiny Sennheiser SK 5012 pack, which is awesome," reports Collett. "It works great with the headset and sounds better than anything out there. What a great unit." For the rest of the show, while she's taking the audience on a musical ride through her hits, old and new, Carey relies on Sennheiser Evolution 500 Wireless Series microphones. "The Evolution SK 500 handheld is paired with a custom dynamic capsule," explains Collett. "Carey's voice has a wide dynamic range so we needed the reduced sensitivity of a dynamic capsule to avoid bleed from other onstage sources during her soft passages. The construction of the SK 500 handheld transmitter afforded the ability to tune the capsule, which made the pairing ideal. This combination is just fantastic. It's working really well. We've got a couple of the mics with the second one modified for a little more high-end." The pop princess is joined onstage by a five-piece band and four backing singers, as well as dancers. "The entire band is on wireless in-ears apart from her," reports Collett. "Carey is instead ringed by speaker wedges, which are bolstered by sidefills. All the wireless in-ears are the Sennheiser's popular Evolution 300 Series." Collett continues, "Sennheiser RF gives me a lot of frequency options which really helps out with all the digital TV out there." The transition from traditional analog to digital television transmission has shrunk the frequency bandwidth available for the operation of temporary systems such as wireless audio gear. To enable engineers to plan ahead or troubleshoot frequencies, Sennheiser now has a comprehensive guide to frequency allocation across the U.S. on its website. The Sennheiser Network-supported "Charmbracelet" tour started out in Japan earlier this year and will end in Europe. "We'll finish this one on November 7th and that'll be it," says Collett, who reveals that he will then likely be back out on the road with one of his regular accounts, which include Bette Midler, Paul Simon, and *NSYNC. Established in 1945 in Wedemark, Germany, Sennheiser is the acknowledged world leader in microphone technology, RF-wireless and infrared sound transmission, headphone transducer technology, and most recently, in the development of active noise-cancellation. Sennheiser Electronic Corporation is the U.S. wholly-owned subsidiary, with headquarters in Old Lyme, Connecticut. www.sennheiserusa.com (END) ______________________________ Heather Schulein AAdvert International 1920 Waukegan Road, Suite 212 Glenview, IL 60025 Phone (847)998-0600 Fax (847)998-0260 e-mail schulein@aadvert.com Dan Richards Digital Pro Sound The Listening Sessions |

The FET Compressor II, an updated version of the renowned Daking FET Compressor, features a new internal switch to facilitate active use of the gain makeup pot for console applications and also to fully bypass in line level rig application. The unit embodies all discrete transistor circuitry, transformer-balanced inputs/outputs and Class A amplifiers. Attack times can be set from 250 to 64 milliseconds while the unit's customized Neve 33609 Auto, A-D Compex Auto, and Fairchild 670 #5 and #6 release settings are faithful to their vintage namesakes. Geoff Daking's experience as a recording engineer served him well when he started a business in 1993 restoring used vintage limiters and compressors. Citing an abundance of poorly built processors on the market designed more by bookkeepers than engineers, Daking started building his own high-quality mic preamp/EQs and compressor/limiters in 1994. To this day he spares little expense when it comes to the components used in every Daking product. Everyone knows that discrete amplifiers offer the most headroom, that Class A circuits eliminate crossover distortion and that the best vintage mic preamps, compressor/limiters and consoles use only the best input transformers. So does Daking. Daking is distributed by the Transamerica Audio Group, Las Vegas. Transamerica, founded by industry veteran Brad Lunde, has quickly become the premier U.S. importer/distributor for high-end audio. Success hinges on Transamerica providing users with technical expertise extending far beyond the norm. The EQ-2NV equalizer is loosely based on the topology of vintage 1081/1083 models. The newly-designed class A, discrete single-ended amplifiers in the EQ-2NV bring the musicality and control of the 108x greater clarity and dynamic range, enabling the user to present a highly musical event, that live up to the demands of modern digital recording. The line input is a transformer coupled bridging type, with sensitivity options ranging from elevated line level (+8dbm) down to keyboard and semi-pro levels (-20dbm). This will permit the unit to be employed with both professional level equipment, and in 'semi-professional' applications. The input gain flexibility can also be employed to gain a new texture to the tones produced, with an added aggression should the user so desire. The equalizer is specifically designed to work with our NV series microphone amplifiers' patch loop, for significantly greater headroom at one end, a lower overall noise floor, and overall greater musicality. When connected via the MP-2NV's patchpoint, the mic and DI inputs are fully functional, as well as the level control, metering and "big iron" of the MP-2NV's output amplifier. The equalizer also has a discrete class A balanced output stage, which allows it to function as a complete stand-alone device. It is available in single or dual channel models. New innovative software instruments demonstrated include Sculpture, a new component-modeling based synthesizer, and UltraBeat, a deep and rich percussion synthesizer that provides multiple synthesis techniques for generating every type of electronic or acoustic drum sound imaginable. Apple also demonstrated Guitar Amp, a new full-featured guitar amplifier simulator, and support for enhanced Apple Loops, the powerful open-standard file format for real-time matching of audio loops and sound effects. “The next generation of Logic will bring a new level of sophistication to computer-based music production,” said Rob Schoeben, Apple’s vice president of Applications Marketing. “With Sculpture and UltraBeat, Logic users will have the ability to create more dynamic and expressive sounds than ever before, and with support for enhanced Apple Loops, they’ll have the convenience and flexibility of loop composition combined with the power of a world-class sequencer.” Sculpture, a new component-modeling based synthesizer, enables users to generate a broad palette of expressive and highly animated sounds. Sculpture uses sophisticated algorithms to simulate the behavioral characteristics of a vibrating string or bar and provides users with the ability to manipulate real world parameters such as the string’s material, its environment and how and where it is vibrated. The resulting sounds are more dynamic and expressive than those generated by more traditional methods of synthesis. Extensive modulation features, resonant body control, the unique capabilities of the Morph Pad, and numerous other parameters, provide the adventurous with endless options for adding life and unique character to their sonic creations. UltraBeat is a deep, rich percussion synthesizer utilizing several types of synthesis including FM, subtractive, sample-based and component modeling. UltraBeat consists of up to 25 independently modifiable drum voices and includes an integrated step sequencer. UltraBeat caters to the producers of electronic dance music covering everything from the analog 808 or 909 to wired percussive sounds. UltraBeat offers a wide variety of possible sounds and detailed control over dynamic timbre changes, an aspect many existing electronic drum modules neglect. Sculpture and UltraBeat significantly broaden the selection of sounds and integrated rhythms a Logic Pro user has to create with and will join the impressive list of award-winning software instruments included with Logic Pro, such as the EVP88 Electric piano, EVB3 Organ, EVD6 Clavinet or the industry leading EXS24mkII sampler. Guitar Amp, a new full-featured guitar amplifier simulator, recreates the sounds of the best known guitar amplifiers by providing impeccably developed amp emulations along with parameters for configuring all other details that make up signature amplifier sounds. These audio details include speaker cabinet selection, microphone type and placement, as well as EQ type and settings. The resulting simulations are incredibly true to life and infinitely playable. Future versions of Logic Pro will also include support for enhanced Apple Loops, the powerful open-standard file format for real-time matching of audio loops and sound effects. The Apple Loops format offers richer information than standard audio files, so users can quickly find a loop by instrument, genre or mood. Future versions of Logic Pro will be able to import MIDI performance and channel strip configuration data contained in the new software instrument form of Apple Loops. These special files can be used either as audio loops or software instrument MIDI loops, providing unprecedented flexibility for loop-based composition. With Apple Loops support, future versions of Logic Pro will easily import projects from GarageBand™, Apple’s recently announced, new music application that turns the Mac® into a complete recording studio allowing users to play, record and create amazing music using a remarkably simple interface. Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh.
