After having had many pricey headphones destroyed by bands in his studio, Harvey Gerst lines up a new cheap tracking headphone that sells for $20.

I got a pair of these. Really useful! Sure, they aren't AKG240s - but they don't cost anywhere near as much. The mono switch is more useful than you might think...

A little tight, so you don't want to wear them for hours. Or maybe I just have a big head...

I bought 5 pair.... while they won't win any awards for sound quality, they sound reasonable, have decent isolation, and handle enough SPL to track with -- the biggest reason I bought them is that for $20 apiece, I don't have to cringe when they get thrown around the studio by a frustrated death metal guitarist who "can't get the riff down!" You can take some of the pressure off by bending the metal clamps outward slightly. Takes about 5 seconds to adjust them to where they're comfortable.

I'm out of the headphone extension cables right now, but they shipped today, so the cables should be here by next week. Sorry about the delay. They'll go out priority mail when they do get here.

On a different note, I'm thinking of adding a "Deluxe" model headphone to the line. Same basic headphones, but with a padded headband, a little more bass extension, and the extra "dampening mod" already done inside the earpiece shell. It would bring the price to around $30 each, plus shipping.

Good idea? Bad Idea? Comments?

Harvey, I think it's a good idea to offer a "step up" in any sales situation. Then again, my day job is sales...ahem

This will open you up to more customers. Go for it!

Dang!

I wish I would have known about these before I purchased those Sony 7506's. You sure got it right on the headphones getting thrashed...I can't believe how careless some people are. The first time I used them I kept hearing them crash on the wood floor out in the living room where I was tracking...getting all scuffed up. I'm thinking...."$75.00 a pair and I'm not even charging for this session!?!?!?! Why don't they use 2 freakin hands!?!?!?!"

I need to look into these!

Trying to start a small business is a bitch!!!

Lemme give you an example:

I mentioned earlier in this thread that I was out of extension cables, and I was expecting some in shortly. Well, let's go back a little earlier.

At one point early on, I ordered 68 cables (all they had at the time), but they only sent me 50. When I saw I was running out of those, I called the distributor who said it would be 2 weeks before they came in. I said great, I'll take 100 sets when they come in.

So two weeks go by, and I don't hear anything. I call, and find out my salesperson is no longer there. Did the cables come in? They did? How many do you have? 70? Fine, I'll take them all.

A week goes by. Cables show up - 118 of them. A couple of days later, 70 more show up. Seems when I asked the last time, the new girl didn't mention that 70 were left AFTER they filled my order for 100, and my backorder from the 68 cords. They got in 200 sets of cables - and now I own 188 of them.

And I just ran out of headphones. Aaaarrrgghhh. I'm calling distributors all over the country right now, getting in 8 to 10 at a time, paying freight and higher prices, just to have stock. Some of you who order headphones in the next two weeks will get the deluxe pairs if I run out of the standard pairs.

Oh yeah, the order page is at:

So if I order the regular headphones now, I might end up with the better ones? Cool! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin
