In testing over 50 microphone preamplifiers at The Listening Sessions we chose the Millennia HV-3 as the reference preamp for all of our microphone tests. The resolution, imagery and depth on the HV-3 is superb. The transparency has made these preamps the industry standard for critical recordings.
How would the Millennia HV-3 compare, sound-wise, to a Manley Dual Mono Mic pre. I keep reading really good things about them. Initially I was going to go with the Manley Dual Mono, but maybe I should check out this puppy.
Grady, the Manley is sort of syrupy thick with some color. Great to add some body to the source. Not as good for capturing spacial definition and dimension.
The Millennia is super fast and transparent. The resolution, depth and imagery is what the HV-3 captures so well - especially with stereo pairs of mics. Not as good when you're needing to add some color and energy to the source as you would with some kinds of rock.
What kind of music are you working on, and what kind of sound are you wanting?
