With the Pearlman TM1 you have a mic that one guy, Dave Pearlman, is designing and knocking out by himself. He does get a few things like capsules and power supplies from Peluso. Transformer by Cinemag. No dealers. No distributors. No execs with Mercedes leases. No employees. No marketing expenses. Straight from his hands to yours. If you'd feel better about paying more I'll call him and tell him to make it $2000 for you.
Here's the thing about the Pearlman TM1 mic: Dave's always working, tinkering and perfecting. He doesn't have what I'd call an exact one-shot off-the-shelf mic that is the same every time. So far, too , there are two patterns - cardioid and omni. The mic I have has a switch inside the body, so when and if you want to change the pattern you have to unscrew the body and pull it down to get at the switch. Not sure how it's working with the new power supplies he's getting from Peluso. So, ask Dave about it. So, if you want a mic that you can either buy or get involved in during Dave putting it together – it's a very cool way to go. He can tweak for you the characteristics you want. So, in that way I'd consider each TM1 a custom mic.
The TM1 has a lot of characteristics you'd expect and want in a 47-inspired mic. It's very smooth. Super silky in the high-mids. Really nice air in the 12K+ range. And full low-end. There's some info on a 47 and TM1 comparison at http://www.cinemag.biz/
