I've been poking around for an 8 channel pre lately and these look interesting:

Shadow Hills Webpage

Their homepage looks pretty limited but these are apparently being distributed through Vintage King Audio. Here's their page on it:

It would be great Dan if you could get these guyz to send you one of these for some testing.

I'd love to hear what you have to say about its various output transformer capabilities.

I just inquired about their "stepped input" option (cost per channel?) as well as how many total dB's of gain are available.

I also asked them to consider sending Dan a unit for bench testing and a review. I sent them your email addy as well as a link to this forum.

We'll see.

Here's a quote from its maker Peter Reardon:

quote:
Hello everybody,
I'm glad you like the mic pre. Here's some details. The gama mic pre is not an api clone. It is an original design, based around a discrete opamp running at 24 volts. The di bypasses the input transformer injecting signal right into the opamp. Phase reverse flips the polarity of the mic input and the di. The output switch selects the output stage between "Nickle" (custom wound transformer based on an L.A. custom console.), The transformer is super clear and wonderful sounding. "Discrete" (transformerless output. Less gain but extremely clean and uncolored.), and "Steel" (custom wound to match a favorite 1970's american output transformer.) Nothing currently available was close to the original, so I had these wound exactly to my specifications. The result is an extremely versatile pre amp, than is world class in any mode. I made these without concern for cost and no corners are cut. The front panel is engraved, the knobs and switch tips are bakelite. The power supply is a custom designed discrete regulated supply and like the mic pre it uses no ic chips, or monolythic surface mount anything. It is 4 rack spaces and weighs 24 pounds! It sounds good too. And looks even better next to one of my mastering consoles.
Thanks again,
Peter Reardon

That thing has me harder than chinese algebra.

I just wish it came in a two or four channel version......not that the price is bad for 8 channels, it's actually very good.

Trans, let me know if you want to chain saw yours in half and sell it to me. Smile Congrats man.

Thanks guyz. pbanana

Ships out today. Recieved a call from Peter Reardon yesterday (the maker of the GAMA unit). A real nice guy, let me know that the power supply for the GAMA is now external as they had been a problem shipping it to somebody. He also engraves your name on a plate on the back of the unit that has the serial number on it. I believe I'm recieving the 6th or 7th unit made. Shipping was slightly delayed for me as an improvement had been made that he didn't want me to feel left out on. Evidently a DB-25 D-Sub 8 channel transformer isolated split is being added to the back of the unit for interfacing with FOH.

The price of the unit has gone up $200 since I ordered the unit. I told Peter on the phone I would be very surprised if the GAMA wasn't a K more expensive in another 2 years. He told me China is buying up all the nickle and I'm pretty much getting prices at cost on 5 year old stock. Cool

I'm stoked.

Man, does that thing look beautiful. I wonder if they'd sell just the front plate and the knobs. I don't think I could afford the real thing, but I could look like some hot shit with that in the rack!

If only I knew 1/10th.

Spoke with Mr. Reardon a few days ago.

He really is a stickler for this whole "quality control" thing. He doesn't want any unit leaving his place till he's confident it has everything about it in symmetry with the next GAMA unit that is following.

So, it could be another couple weeks.
