Waz up, Rolff?

Click my link...hear some familiar tunes. Got another four in the works. Gonna come nab some more stuff, no doubt. Did you guys decide to bring the Great River EQ on board permanently? I've missed it every day since it went back. Wink

The GAMA arrived yesterday Applaud

Packed wonderfully.. .snug as a bug in a rug.

The pictures do not even do this thing justice. Absolutely beautiful to just sit and stare at. Bawling

Now to see how she sounds. Have 3 live sound dates this weekend.

I'll keep ya posted. Coffee

So how does it sound? What connectors are on the back?

Each of the XLR inputs (8) has a corresponding male XLR output. There are also two DB-25 outputs. Each of these DB-25 outputs corresponds to the 8 Nickle transformers and the other 8 to the Steel transformers. There is not a DB-25 output for the 8 Discreet options.

So how does it sound?

To these young ears (4 years into recording. .first on a Roland 1880. .now a Roland 2480) they sound absolutely fantastic. The first thing I noticed about the signals passing through the GAMA (Vocals [Neumann KMS-105 & Shure 58], kick [Audix D6], guitar ribbon [Royer R-122], gt/keys amp [MXL V69], Bass DI [TAB Funkenwerk V71] was how absolutely clear, detailed, and pronounced everything sounded coming out of this preamp.

From there, I went to evaluating the differences from the various output transformers. .. Nickle to Steel to Discreet. The differences from Nickle to Discreet and from Steel to Discreet were apparent. The differences from Nickle to Steel to these young ears was very subtle.

Primarily I was attracted to the Nickle setting. This one inherently has more gain so perhaps a bit of it was simply LOUDER IS BETTER. What I palpably recognized was that vox sounded excited & aggressive, like they just had a shot of double espresso. Very pushed forward.

The Steel transformer was used on Kick. This one seems to smooth things out a bit. At present that's the best I can describe this option.

The discrete option had inherently less gain that the Nickle setting. Signals sounded absolutely transparent and uncolored... .very clean gain.

These impression were all culled from 5 live sound mixing dates. I'm very excited to hear how the GAMA translates signals into the recorded medium. I'm especially excited to to hear how my high end is improved using the GAMA in conjuction with the R-122 on drum overheads.

One aspect I must give props to is my interaction with Mr. Peter Reardon, maker of the Shadow Hills GAMA. Whether over phone or email, he is a consumate professional. If you so choose to move on something from Shadow Hills, you will not be left disappointed with the product or the customer support that Peter provides. As "my first real preamp" purchase, I am very glad I went with Shadow Hills.

Best, trans

P.S. Another quaint detail I'm stoked about?
The back plate of the GAMA reads: CUSTOM MADE FOR CHRIS ANDERSON

SERIAL # SHGAMA03

I have the 3rd unit made. Cool

At the rate these units are actually shipping, it would be listening session #35 in 2008. Of course, this also means that every Shadow Hills product is a carefully created work of art worthy of our gearlust. I want the Stereo Deluxe GAMA, dammit!
