Dan, have Yo been using PR-40? We need a female voc live mic, I´m wondering how this mic sounds compared to Shure Beta87A, Audio Technica AE5400, KMS-105,...

kaapo, I'm using all this stuff. If it's "on the bench" that means I'm using it.

Are you sure you mean the PR-40 for live stage work?

For live stage work I'd suggest you look into the PR-20.

Dan, any word up on these Heil mics? I hear they're quite nice, all dynamics. Dynamics that sound condensor...

that's my second favorite song of all time...everything else is tied for first though.

I'm also very curious about this mic.

I've exchanged some emails with Bob Heil and have thought about getting one but would like to hear more about them in use.

I've been looking for a mic that will work well as a live upright bass mic in the same way the RE20 is recommended for. I would also want it to have some use recording vocals and guitar/bass cabinets.

I do wish that Heil's site posted a frequency plot.

I'm wishing to avoid a mic that is too bright or mid scooped.

Dot, have you developed a feeling for what are some good uses for the PR 40?

I'm interested too... so interested I BOUGHT one - hasn't arrived yet though.

It was a hard choice 'cause all the good word on the net has been re: what a great "stand alone" radio/podcast/etc vocal mic it is. Nothing really on how it performs musically.

I have owned some descent LD condensors (mojave, nuemann, akg, rode, blue) but keep going back to the ole' 57 for vox at home (less ambiant noises)...so, I decided to give this a try.

I just got one. It does give you an immediate perfect "radio" voice for broadcasting. I can see it working well things like kick, snare, bass amp, horns, and some voices. Super smooth and extended. All in all a great package for the price. Nice clip and wood box makes it seem like a $1000 mic.

I found this forum on a search.
Re the heil mic, i just got 2 pr-40s a couple months ago and have used them on lots of things with great success and i do dare say, satisfaction.

Acoustic guitar:fantastic. Liquidy and smooth, nice present midrange and none of that blowing into blanket feeling on the low mids and bottom.

Snare: the only mic i have found other than a 57 that i really think works.
Kick: It's all i have been using, so as you can guess, great on toms as well.
(I'm ordering 3 more soon)
Miking a bass cab: Captures it in a very real way that sits nice in the mix.
Vocals: ...don't throw away your condensers.
It's good, and would be very cool on Lenard Cohen probably. For a softer sound on vocals I would prefer a ribbon over it though, but hey I'm sure there will be times when it is the one and it fits better than any other.

Oh Yeah!
Guitar amps: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't say i would use it over the R-84 or 121 too often but it is a good sound. Bricks

I've been using all of the Heil mics for a couple weeks now, from the PR20 up to the PR40. I keep trying them on different sources, with success. Yea, the PR40 on kick is quite good. It requires a little more EQ, at least with the two drumsets I've tried, but takes to EQing well. Nice point/attack sound and doesn't distort. I've mic'ed E guitar cabs; Good stuff. Great for toms as well. Haven't had as much success for vocals, although I'll find something that fits it well. I tell you the PR20 handheld is very good, for live and in the studio. Really liking it for snare.

I used a Heil PR-40 to make a station ID spot.

http://iacmusic.com/station.aspx?stationid=1132

Second on the list, called "Chill Zone ID"

The center mic is a Heil PR-40. I used a Pearlman TM-1 for the wide-spread voices on the L and R channels.
