Posted this in the recording forum a while back, will try again over here.

Anyone have any experience with the Akai GX-77 and the Sony TC-7884? They fell into my lap. They are reel-to-reel tape decks.

Both are older and probably would need some reconditioning. I have not tried plugging them in and powering them up.

I've done a google search on the models and have turned up little to nothing helpful.

Maybe someone here knows these units?

They will at a minimum need a good cleaning. If they havent been carefully stored, which is most likely, the belts will need replacement. This is do-able at home if you are mechanicly inclined. If you are not gifted in that area, there may be a shop nearby who can get the belts and install them. If you want to do it yourself, the belts can be ordered, usually by size. You will need to know the thickness of the belt and it's length. A possible source is mcminone.com.
