I now see the light, and finally understand the real reason musicians should never master their own stuff:

We don't have cool grown-up looking slanty inset Mastering Engineer racks sunk into our desks.

However, now you've given away the Mastering Engineer's Secret Weapon - the Pod Pro Master Bus Processor! Tricks of the pros revealed!

That's the secret to what I do when I'm rendering giant files! Big Grin Back in the day, I could actually play a bit.

It's a biotch too - I've got a Manley Vari-Mu coming that's going to have to go in that slot, and there's no room in the two-track rack for it.

I ain't gonna be able to play my gee-tar no more! Slap

Oh well, just going to have to drink more coffee... Coffee

Desk from Office Max: $100
Six space rack: $75
Use of friend's power tools to slice the rack and cut holes in the desk: $0

Having all the controls within reach for $1400 less than an Argosy: PRICELESS!

Where'd you get those six rack jobbers? They definitely look nice.

Yeah, I'd also like to know--I wouldn't mind a 6-space or two for toting, say, an HD24 and preamp on location, or for scooting around the studio.

John, was curious if the desk causes any reflections or otherwise hinders the sound at all from those beautiful B&Ws?

John
love to see a view back a bit, looking straight on at the whole set-up. Just intrigued where your right side speaker combos are.

And those monitors - I'm a bit of a noob in this stuff - but dont those sort of monitors (crt?) cause noise? Two of 'em? Or are they special type?

cheers

Those actually started off as a single 6-space Middle Atlantic Products rack. Sam Ash, Guitar Center, Musician's Friend - I think everyone carries them.

It was just a matter of (very carefully) marking everything out, having a buddy guide me on the table saw, then putting them back together.

On the shots - I'm working on that - My camera sucks. I need something with a wider angle to it - That desk is 96" tip-to-tip.

Hmmm... I wonder what the angle is on those single-use APS cameras...

Real perty there John. Where's the lava lamp? Smile

Argosy. Yeah. I just moved my control room out into my main room and now need a desk of some kind to house the Ghost. Been looking at one of the Argosy's for that. They ain't cheap iz they? Oh well, it's only money. Wink

I actually had the very first Argosy 90 for the Ghost console at JEM.

A little pricey, yes. But built like a tank, and they go together in no time at all.

That was sort of a "test run" to make sure the thing wasn't going to collapse. I basically threw all the "B" stuff in (which is now on the other side) and filled up the racks with whatever was there. Although I have to admit, just last night, I installed the Pod into my two-track rack, (not in the photo, off to my left, where the MasterLink actually resides). It gives me something to do during long burns, you know?.

I just need to get some up-to-date photos... I've got some on my "GEAR" page, but not of the room - Just the racks.

Just in case someone comes along this thread and gets confused - The photo that was on my server was updated. It's still a crappy photo, but it's more current. No POD in the rack, it's a straight-on shot, yada yada.

So if anyone gets confused by the previous comments, you know why.

Ahhh... The B&W's changed the way I hear things. On the blind test I even liked those ("M" / "800" series) better than the "N" series.

Let me rephrase that - I personally felt that the "M" series was slightly more "picky" than the slightly more "creamy" sounding "N" series.

There are those who think I'm insane because of that. Some others think it's only obvious.

The amp is a humble 2B-LP. What an amazing sounding (and amazingly HOT) amplifier. 20 year "automatic" warranty, tons of headroom... I had to use a (older, actually nicer) Kenwood amp for a week or so while I was between amps... That was a week of sheer torture. It was like filling up a Lamborghini at the local Gas 'N Sip. Cable is just good ol' Monster 12.

See, you got me all misty... Coffee A little coffee will take care of that.

Yeah, those cables - I've been running new cables all over under there - Recently added an AES router, prepping for the new (ADK) DAW, and getting new carpeting. So, for just a while, neatness doesn't count. At all. I'm going to make some more small mods to the desk during the carpeting chapter (I have to disassemble it into 3 sections to get it through the door). Cable hooks and some strategically placed cable holes are a big part of that.
