I have some experience with the uad-1 plugs but not in a mastering sense. the fairchild is nice if you want the mix to slide around within itself. odd to describe, but very cool in small ammounts. la-2a is cool for a drum submix with bass in the middle. 1176ln is aggressive and colored in compression. the 1176se is easier on the power and i find much more use for it on toms and tons of individual components within the mix. Neve 1073 EQ...sorry i have no experience with this one. The Pultecs are very cool but i find it easier to dial in what i want with the cambridge eq. I need to see what the curves are like. with all of these, i have no opinion in mastering due to no reliable point of reference. so in conclusion, the uad-1 is a great addition to what i do...i have two cards
Hope this helps, pbc |

First - The Precision EQ and the Pultec Pro (which is basically just the Pultec with the added midrange controls) are two of the greatest plugs of any kind and I would gladly pay as much for the entire collection for a single instance of either one alone.
As far as dynamics - I think the UAD emulations are great, and I have to say that I'm totally comfortable using them in a mixing situation. But when it comes to a mastering scenario (A) UAD really hasn't made a really cool buss compressor and (B) No one else really has either (IMHO). I'm hardware almost all the way with dynamics. Parallel is another story - The LA2A finds its way into more than a few projects, as does the 1176LN. The Fairchild, as did the hardware, didn't really grow on me. I thought I was nuts about it, but then found that almost every other M.E. I talked to about them had the same feeling. Not that the UAD emulation isn't pretty good - It's just a pretty good emulation of a pretty good compressor that just so happens to cost $30,000 if you find one with a working "POWER" switch. It has its uses for M/S processing, but I'd still rather just create a M/S matrix and use hardware or perhaps the LA2A or 1176. The Precision Maul-The-Band compressor definitely mauls the band in a much friendlier manner than almost any other MBC I've ever used. But still, that's not saying much. I really don't see the attraction. That being said, it's one of the greatest frequency-conscious noise gates I've ever used (period) and the "MIX" control is an absolute life-saver. As a compressor, I use it here and there on problematic mixes that have no other real recourse or can't efficiently be remixed. Worth having as one of the greatest MBC's around? Sure. But again, I'll ask for a remix before using it unless it's just the tiniest whisker of something. |
