Hey John, I was scoping out your gear looking to see what tape player you use, when I see you added the Toft ATC-2. So, I'm wondering, what's a mastering guy want with it? OK, I can imagine the answer. But, seriously, what do you end up using it for? How do you like it? What do you like or dislike about it? Inquiring minds want to know!

If only I knew 1/10th.

I like the EQ on it... I don't use it often, but it's really great when it's called for.

The compression is okay, the preamps are okay (I drag it out occasionally for live tracking). Beat the snot out of a bunch of similarly priced "channel strip" type units (and several stand-alone units) in a shootout we had recording a symphonic orchestra. I know Fletcher wasn't too thrilled with the preamps. I was a little more impressed than he was I suppose (but I don't mess with the "ultimate" collection of preamps on a daily basis as he does).

But admittedly, it sits there more than anything else... If I tracked more often, it'd get some fairly heavy use I'm sure.

I didn't figure the pres would do you much service. No one seems to comment much on the compressor. The EQ section gets all the attention. But, I've been curious about the ATC-2 as a bang for the buck combination of EQ and compressor. Is the EQ pre or post compression?

If I recall, the EQ is before the compressor.
