For mastering purposes, I'd think those are a little too...
Tiny...? Limited-range, narrow dispersion nearfield monitors aren't exactly what I'd be looking at... You don't want loudspeakers that make a recording of a contrabass sound good - You want loudspeaker that make it sound like the contrabass is *in the room with you* Even the previous suggestion on the 604's - Those are on the small side of what I'd be looking at. I know, I know - This starts a lot of "well, this guy uses them..." conversations. I'm just going with my own experience on this one - When I finally started out "on my own" I desperately tried to get the same results out of nearfields and smaller somewhat "full range" loudspeakers until I finally (FINALLY!!!) wound up with a used set of B&W Matrix 802's. If I would've just looked for those in the first place, I would've saved a lot of trouble and "respectable results" would've come a LOT sooner. That being said - When I was working over other people's shoulders, I was always using large, full-range, standard dispersion monitoring. Nearfields were for flipping over to check with - if they were in the room at all. So, I might be a little biased in that respect. However, I *did* try the nearfield and "bookshelf" sized boxes for some time - and hated every minute of it - so I suppose I may have a basis for the bias... Besides the engineer, they're the absolute most important thing in the studio. I know a few guys who have a "rule of thumb" that your monitors should cost you three times whatever your most expensive piece of gear is. I think that's a whisker excessive myself - But I totaly understand the thought - You will only ever be as good as your monitoring scenario allows you to be. |

I agree. I'm no ME, but I wouldn't want to master on the BM5A's. I just recently got the 6A's, and I wouldn't recommend those for mastering either. They simply don't go low enough for you to make a final decision on a recording. I love them for mixing, but I wouldn't want them as the final step between my music and the public. I suppose you could use a sub with them, but I personally hated using a sub when I had one. I could never get it to sound right at all. Some people like it, I don't.
Why do you want to go active? I would have thought for mastering you'd want as much tweakability as possible. |

Monitors...
Before I decided to spend my savings in mastering gear, I thought to myself... "what piece of gear should I get first?" I've always thought that the speakers are one of most crucial elements for a mastering suite. I decided to go for the monitors before anything else and I didn't want to get "any" pair just for sake of it. I got Dunlavy SC-IV with Bryston 4BST and I took it from there. To me it was absolutely worth the wait, time and money. That's my own experience. Great forum, by the way... Luis |

Ive been trying---and trying and trying,,for the past 2 days,, make my piece of SHIT monitor speakers work for me but to no avail,my ears are fatigued,Im really--really pissed off! I know what I want to hear, but as I had expected, the speakers cannot produce the sound I wnat. I have found myself, believing that what Im hearing from my so called mastered mix is good if not great, only to be shot down when played back on another system. Its my own fault, and I know it,its time to stop b-s-ing and step up to the plate. Looking for that perfect tone |

That's a rough call - The 1031's (I understand they've been discontinued for some freakish, bizarre reason...) are great... But so are the BM15's...
If you feel the need to change, I think the added low end of the BM15's would certainly come in handy. But if you're getting good results from the 1031's, I... I just don't know. It's not like going from a crappy speaker to a great speaker - It's going from a great speaker to yet another great speaker. So I suppose it comes down to how much you like 'em... |
