I know the front end can be carved but it seems that release doesn offer the same physics(the knee). By george that's it! Is there a release knee or is the release just a gate?

Well the world brought me the answer before anyone answered. Was re-reading Katz's "mastering audio" section on compression and it says that some compressors have a release delay. This is what I was getting at. Thanks Bob. Now I just have to find out if i own one.
