Hi, everyone says to run your music through a manley varu-mu compressor/limiter for best results. My question is, whats so great about it,and why does every good mastering studio have one? thanks.

A) Because it's a wonderful sounding unit.

B) Because it's a wonderful sounding unit.

But it's certainly *NOT* for everything, definitely not for every mix.

I still use a manley Mastering SLAM! with a digital card and that sound amazing. The opto-limiter compressor give a clear and depth sound. I also use it in an upsampling configuration. The kick drum get a very warm and special sound.

When you need smooth, creamy, "t-shirt and jeans" compression.

"Relaxed" -- Non clinical -- Smooth & creamy. Definitely not for everything - But when you need something along those lines, the VM is a fine thing to have.
