John I've not been at this too long, i'm a guitarist by trade who's been learning DAW/mix/master for about 3 years now. It caught me by surprise how adamant you are about multiband compression being a poor tool for mastering and.........i've just realized how right you are!
The more you putz with it (MBC) the worse it sounds compared to the mix and you don't realize what's going wrong until you turn the damn thing off! Sonar Pro Tools Sound Forge |

I dunno... Lately I've really been getting into using MBC on almost everything.
 Heh... I'm kidding, I'm kidding...  Seriously though - Never found a use for it on a mix that actually sounded good. Seeing as you're running into the same wall, that probably says something good about the mixes.
