ive tried the WAVES stuff.....pretty good. Ive tried the PSP masterpack......not bad either.

but for simplisity, i love using Izotope OZONE. ALL esential plugins all all there in one plugin interface. Is it the best sounding? probably not......but for the price, its a great tool to have for someone who is just starting to learn how to Master thier own mixes. TONS of presets available to get your started in the right direction, and the MBIT+ 'ultra' dithering sounds wonderfull...........

None of those are mastering programs - Those are effects plugins. Pretty much any set of plugins can be used if they give you the sound you're looking for.

But I'd be hard-pressed to call anything a "mastering program" if it can't create the production master...

good point. I was under the assumption, of that is what he meant by mastering programs.

i really dont think there is such a thing as a "mastering program". anything that can open up a audio stereo track....technicaly can be used as a mastering program i guess.

I was thinking of sequencing programs that will produce a frame-accurate P&Q log and manage a RedBook burn...

I dont think you are going to find one program that does it all. The problem with t racks and ozone the pre sets in those are what every one is going to go for and they are way over done. I have been forced to do a lot of mastering for clients that cant or wont spend the extra money for real mastering. I use sound forge to edit. Then I master in wave lab. Some plug ins I use a lot are the waves c4, UAD precision eq, it is great, and the L3 or the precision plug in. I have found I seem to like the UAD a little better. The best thing Ive found is when you are mixing to try to get it to sound as close as what you are going to want and keep the levels down and leave a lot of headroom. this makes mastering much easier. Another thing Ive started doing based on a tip from John. Dont record at 48. It is better to record at 44 24 bit than to have to resample while mastering.

yes, but i like the presets in Ozone as a starting point. 99% of the time....you almost have to adjust them, the presets are WAY overdone and extreme.

anyone would be a fool, if they were to use the preset, and export thier song and say "LOOK MA! I MASTERD MY SONG!"

I guess what John was trying to say & everybody missed here was that mastering is not running the song through various compressors & eqs.

Most of the time you don't master a song by itself. Usually it's a set of songs, album or whatever which are supposed to sound together as a peace & sound right on as many systems as possible & finally quality burning it on a quality medium.

Along the lines of Wavelab is Sony Sound Forge 8. It also comes bundled with CD Architect which is a Red Book CD authoring program.

I like to use Wavelab for my mastering, the montage feature helps me to put the whole project together.

Haven't found a good use for Ozone except on some dance tracks. Seems a bit artificial for my taste.

Love the UAD plugs, I use the prescision limiter and EQ, also like the cambridge although alot of people rank on this one.

I not a real mastering house and always tell clients to get their cd's professianlly mastered. I have no outboard gear only software.

Nuendo, Wavelab
UAD,
