Nice to have you hear-!!

I am a new-be to recording and a 25 year jazz veteran.

I will be doing live recordings of piano trio mostly with the occasional sax, guitar and singer added.

I am really struggling on overhead mic choices, pattern of mic and placement. So far I have used 414's, 441's and a pair of C12VR.

The 414 have come close but I have to drop the lid to half stick. This is not a welcomed choice by the player during a live gig.

To prevent the bleeding I have gone to hyper pattern mic's.

Please advise on set up?

Thanks
Jim

I understand that you may be stuck with hyper to minimize bleeding, but you lose the sound of the "box". If players do not like half stick they will not like covering the piano, which is usually a good solution in the studio (although of course there are headphones to help the musicians hear).

You may have to accept the leakage if you cannot go for isolation. Is there any way you can put up partitions around the piano to allow both the full sound and also a certain degree of isolation (or limiting the leakage at least)?
