If you mean pro mixes, using just presets, some are better than others, but almost everything I've ever heard needs some form of tweaking, often drastic.

Presets can often be a good starting point, but the music will dictate changes. There's a big difference between "good enough to sell at gigs" and "this is for a major label release".

Example: I've been living with one track of an album that's been giving me fits. I originally muted the piano to let an accordian part carry a harmony with the singer, then brought back the piano to finish up the song. The piano came in too strong, and it bothered me for a couple of weeks.

I finally went back to the tracks, and faded in the piano instead at an earlier point in the song (about 3 seconds sooner). Made all the difference in the world. It's obsession with all the details that can make or break a song.

ditto, those presets are really cool for finding out how to get certain sounds when the track is solo'd, but when it comes to fitting it in the mix, there are so many variables that you honestly can't have someone dialing in settings for you. I've been doing this as a hobby for three years and the first year was ALL guesses. I'm just now getting to the point where I'm happy with my mixes and understand how/why/when that sorta thing with with fx. And it's all been thanks to forums like this and homerecording.com/bbs as well as studio time and hanging out next to the audio guys at live shows. Looking forward to seeing you more up here!

I think he means getting a pro mix using a PC instead of using outboard equipment.... Not just using presets, but just in general using your computer to record/mix/master instead of analog gear.

I could be wrong, but that's what I assume he means.

thank you Tekker

I have many years of experience with mixing on an outboard desk and know pretty well how to get the best out of the equipment ofcourse still have many things to learn, but that's also one of the fun parts, learning from what you are doing wrong.

but i just can not get a good sounding mix when i'm mixing in the box
and im wondering is it me or the equipment do i have to get another aproach for pc mixing
is it even possible to get a pro mix out of the pc with no external gear and no mixing console

im using nuendo with a rme 9632 and a adi ae converter, uad pci-card all the wave plugs
and shit results.

thanks anyway to the preset guys for responding

YES, of course you can get pro mixes out of the box.

It has nothing to do with the gear you use but how you use it. I equate "prosumer" digital audio to an old "B" studio. Not great sounding, but very flexible. Factor in one-click perfect recalls, automation up the wazooo (and "undo") and you have at least a "B+/A-" studio...in the box.
