I've made a shortcut for this topic into the Recording Forum. I talk with John fairly often and sort of twisted his arm to do this. : )

The bottom line is he's already got most of what he needs to do it anyway.

A lot of the pres that are being developed by other companies to fit in the 500 series lunchboxes have some to quite a bit of color to them. A lot of people know I feel the Hardy M-1 is the quintessential clean preamp. And to have something like it as a complement to the other pres being offered is a no-brainer.

Maybe John will pop in with some comments as he develops the Hardy pre for the 500 series lunchbox.

I recomend John Hardy preamps all the time! Great amps for sure. I think now is the time for studio who have not yet bought a lunch box to do so. Ive got my first one on the way too. Up till now, I just rack the modules, but this modular is really the way to go, even though it is costly to get the first module powered. But the fact is, we need (want)clean preamps, colored preamps, and everything in between. The 500 box gives us the option, one channel at a time. The other really big thing for my studio is space. In a 3U rack you can get as many as 11 preamps. Thats nice! Were as most of my pres are 2 channels per 1U and 4 channels per 2U. I need more space!

I will look at the Hardy's when they're ready. I always like things in pairs, so maybe 2!

John has made preamps for many different consoles including Sony and MCI. So its really about time for an API console amp! My guess is he probably already has made these on a limited basis in the past, just not comercially available.
