Yay

Thanks Peter - not at all necessary but very, very cool.

I'm working on a track that will use Pacifica exclusively. I'll post it when its done for anyone that is curious. Smile

Thanks, Peter! Cool

Now, as far as giving other folks a taste of the Pacifica, please let me know what sources you'd like to hear. If I can arrange it, I'll record some samples...

Hi Peter,

Yes! It arrived Monday! Thanks so much - what a well-bulit, handy device! Again, it was totally unecessary... Smile

And as for drums, I'm looking to do some drums tracks over the next few weeks (depends on the availability of a drummer I know here on campus).

I'm also recording a singer/songwriter and a folk/bluegrass musician over the next few weeks. The Pacifica will be featured prominently. Once I have some things I'm happy with I'll post the results.

Smile

Peter,

How do the rear XLR inputs and 1/4 high impedance inputs interact?

For instance if I had it racked up with XLR cables routinely plugged in the back but wanted to DI something through the front would I need to unplug the XLR inputs or would plugging into the front 1/4 jacks defeat the XLR inputs?

I had a recent windfall of $1600 but I am trying to decide where to best spend it that sits quietly in my rack out of sight.

Quick question. Are all original Quad 8 mic pre/s EQ channel strips the same? Are there any bad ones?

Hi Scooter,

So sorry for the delayed response.........it's been nuts here after being away at TapeOp.

You shouldn't have any problems with the Pacifica in that case.

Thanks for being understanding.

Hi Kane,
They are not ALL the same. The Ventura, Pacifica ,and Coronado have the same Pres and I believe EQs as well. The differences in those boards I believe were in the bussing BUT I could be off on that. They also had an MM Series pres that have a different flavor (darker IMO) pres.
You should take a good look at the history of that company when you have the time.
It's a very interesting read to see who worked for them and when they worked for them plus the different hands that they went thru.

I haven't really run across any bad ones yet!

Hello Peter,

I was wandering if Pacifica & P1 sound similiar or at least close?
I figured nobody else could know the answer as good as You.
By the way, you probably heard it many times, but I still have to say that MP-2 sounds awsome on bass.

Thank You.

Hi nbarts.

Yes, I get this question asked all the time and thank you on the MP-2.

The Pacifica v P-1:

It's really funny now that more of our products are out there and people email/call me with their results after A/Bing the 2 units. And sometimes I'm even surprised by the results!!!
Some people LOVE the P-1 over the Pacifica and some love the Pacifica over the P-1.

There IS a difference ..........I don't see it as night and day type of difference. Of course in the end it all depends on you and your needs!

The reason for the slight difference is this....
Pacifica:

28v going across the rails
larger output transformer.

P-1

16v across the rails
smaller transformer

Both of these two factors result in a slightly different sound.
IMO the P-1 comes closest to the sound of the old Quad Eight where as with the Pacifica we tried to match that sound and then did our best to improve on it.

Sometimes when you make things you really never know 100% what the outcome will be.
On paper it SHOULD be this but when you hear it the results can sometimes surprise you.

I hope this is enough information?

Thanks again nbarts,
Peter Montessi

Thanks to this forum (and Dot) I am now the very happy owner of a Pacifica and assorted toys (Peluso 22 47, pair of CEMC6's and an RME ADI-2). This was really my first venture into anything resembling pro level audio equipment and I have agonized over mic and pre selection for the better part of a year. This forum was great but a very nice 45-minute discussion with Dot was the clincher. The Peluso sounds great through the Pacifica. I don't get as much time to spend singing and playing as I would like. I'm sure the Pacifica and Peluso will help inspire me to find more time for what is now just a hobby.

One of the reasons I wanted to post here is to comment on A-Designs and Peter specifically. When you buy anything you never really know what you will get for support if you should need it. The Pacifica arrived with one very small problem that didn't even prevent it from being used to its fullest capabilities. The output connector phase was reversed on one of the channels. Easily worked around by pushing the PHASE button on the front panel. I mentioned it to Dot who immediately contacted Peter. Within an hour I received a call from Peter. It was obvious that he was concerned and would do whatever was needed to make the unit perfect AND take steps to ensure that this very rare occurrence didn't reoccur. I was a stranger that made a very meager first-time purchase for a hobby and Peter (and Dot) gave me the level of attention that I would have thought would have been reserve for their "important" and regular customers.

I think I am going to appreciate the Pacifica (and Peluso) even more as my ears become a little more discerning. I spent a number of years playing live music for a living back in the 70's and early 80's. I have a lot to learn in the area of recorded sound versus live sound. It was obvious in the first few seconds that the sound is a huge improvement over that of my SM-57, NT-1 or MK319 through the pre in my FW-1884. Now I need to learn to appreciate the subtleties.

Now that I have found a very nice mic pre it is reassuring to know that the company will be incrediably supportive if I should ever need assistance. Thanks Peter!

And thanks to Dot. I don't know where you find the time for all you do but your help is greatly appreciated.

Don

I second your comments about Peter.

I had a slight issue with my unit, and he was great.

After chatting a bit on the phone, it became very clear that he is personally invested in delivery a superb product. He really wanted me to be satisfied, and I am. Smile

Btw, I'm checking out a Soundelux E49, and its a good match with the Pacifica.

Here is a some off-the-cuff riffing on my Taylor 810, recorded in stereo with a Mojave MA-200 and a Soundeluxe E49.

The only processing is a bit of low-end roll-off and a gentle 10k shelve.
