Btw, I just read a very positive review of the Pacifica in the latest issue of Recording Magazine. Congrats to Peter and all the folks at A-Designs. I continue to be very happy with mine. Smile

OK, some vocals... Smile

Here's something brand new that I'm working on now. It's just a draft, but it will give you a taste.

The song is called "Church Of Wolves," and it's about (of all things!) the medieval Cathars and the Albigensian Crusade. It's a Soundelux E49 through the Pacifica, with a touch of compression (Sonalksis) and a gentle shelving bost ca 10k. (Voxengo HarmoniEQ)

File size 4.82 megs

Do you mean "warm" like the heretic bonfires Pope Innocent III and his Soliders of Christ set all across the Languedoc?

Just kidding. Wink

Yea, the E-49 has a very warm sound. As I mentioned, its a scratch vocal while I work out the song. When cutting the final vocals I will try a few other mics, as well. Hopefully that will give those interested even a broader sense of how the Pacifica sounds. Smile

The Pacifica is great - but my Peluso P12 does sound better on vocals through the A designs MP-2A - a very underrated pre these days for some reason.

It is quiet too - even with ribbons.

Just realized - strangely enough - I hadn't pecked many notes about the Pacifica yet.

Here's from a post I just made over at Gearslutz in a topic, A Designs Pacifica - most versatile mic-pre?.

I've long felt API was the most versatile mic pre - until we started using a Pacifica. Where the API has an almost biting midrange - which is great to make sources punch through the mix - the Pacifica smoothes out in the midrange ala Neve. The Pacifica has a rounder low-end (ala Neve) than API. More open high-end than API. We still use our API's, but the Pacifica is easily the most used preamp in the studio now - along with the LaChapell 992 EG. (we've tested through around 100 preamps.)

The Pacifica pairs particularly well with the Peluso 22 251 - which I also feel is the most versatile mic in its price range. (we've tested through about 200 mics.)

Let's make sure we're using the term "versatile" the same way here. There are pres that do offer more sonic versatility, such as the Great River NV, Phoenix Audio DRS, Vipre - in that you can get a wider range of tones - from cleaner to more colored - from them. What I mean by versatile is that it works well on more applications and on more styles of music. If that's the kind of versatile you're talking about, then, yes, I'd say - and have said - that the Pacifica is the most versatile preamp on the market. If I had to walk away tomorrow and only ever use one mic preamp, my choice would be the Pacifica - with no reservations or looking back. [ Well, as long as I could bring along my LaChapell 992 EG to keep it company. ]

The DI is cleaner than the mic pre. Which is a plus if you want something cleaner. But if you want the more colored Pacifica signature sound, then run into the DI in channel 1, and then out of channel 1 XLR into channel 2 XLR. If you want more color then slap on the pads and turn up the knobs.

While you're doing that you also might wanna play around with both channels on one mic going into channel 1, and then out of channel 1 into channel 2. Play with pads and input levels to taste.

Hey Dan,
Thanks for the notes. I just purchased an API Lunchbox with one 512c from Ron001, and was considering adding another 512c and a Pacifica (p-1) but maybe I'll go for 2 P-1's instead.

Thanks........

I'll have to try that!

I have been running my Pacifica and BAE312A through an A Designs ATTY2'D. It works great as output faders so I can crank up the gain of the pres if I want to.

I wonder if Peter still comes around here.

Are you planning to add volume output knobs to your pres?
