I'll flush some of this out. But want to jot some things down.

Ronan and I had a similar approach and philosophy for miking in this situation. The choices and placement were made fairly fast with only a few minor adjustments in mic positioning after some initial listening.

Tracks 1-3: The three kicks all had AKG D-112's mounted inside them - as the resonant heads have no holes.

Track 4: For the snare Ronan used the small AKG clip-on mic that Terry had with him.

Track 5: The Gefell UM70 "center" mic was placed on the stand under the ORTF pair of DPA 4011's. Ronan had been playing with a few mics in this position for bootcamp, and the Gefell had done a nice job.

Track 6: Ronan wanted a spot mic near the top of the kit to give the high-toms some presence. We used a DPA Compact Cardioid.

Tracks 7 & 8: Drums OH's: Ronan's a nut for Shure KSM32's - and they do a good job, picking up things evenly. The 32's were placed above the kit.

Tracks 9 & 10: This was an ORTF pair of DPA 4011's. I've had success with using this configuration out in front of the kit in situations where we wanted to get a natural sound.

Tracks 11 & 12 [ Toms HI and Toms LO ] This was for the set of chromatic toms that Terry has on the left side of the kit. Ronan and I quickly agreed that a pair of omnis would cover all of them. We chose a pair of DPA 4006's.

Track 13: This was Ronan's Mesa Boogie cab that he miked with a 57.

Track 14: This was Ronan's other cab. Not sure of make? Miked with a Coles 4038.

Track 15: Lo toms: These were to get a little extra presence from the floor toms. Ronan stuck an MD421 under them.

Track 16: Compressed Room mic: In the A/B tests we'd listened to the day before we felt the Pearl CC22 was a little to scooped in the mids for general duties, but thought it would be just right for a room mic.

Track 17: "Butt" mic. I was hoping to try a Pearlman TM-1 behind the kit, but we didn't get the mic in time. A Coles 4040 was initially placed near the xylophone. Then Ronan suggested moving it behind the kit - with the figure-8 patterns facing off to the sides. Did the trick.

From this shot are the pair of DPA 4006's under the chromatic toms [ look a bit, they're there ], the Gefell UM70 out in front of the kit, and a DPA Compact cardioid [ positioned at the end of the Latch Lake stand at the center of the kit. ]

Never seen anything like that drum kit, more like a sound sculpture tool than a kit.... "wow" is right... that's just way too many things for one person to hit.

Looks like a great trip Dan even if you aren't "actually crazy about musician's as a whole" Wink

Thanks for the pics,
CArl

Cool pics Dan!! I am glad you got a lot of the technical documentation while I was busy trying to be a rock star!!!

Hey gang, the unknown guitar cab is just that. I found it in the trash. The weave on the grill makes me think it might be an old yamaha. It sounds awful by itself but sometimes blends nice with other cabs.

The only mic'ing I could have handled there was putting the 57 in front of Ronan's cab...

the drums would have caused my head to explode..
